Rain may take Justin Rose to No 1

Rain may take Justin Rose to No 1”

Justin Rose, on 17 under, leads by one shot after 54 holes of the PGA Tour event at Aronimink Golf Club, with Team Europe colleague Rory McIlroy and United States hopeful Xander Schauffele poised in a tie for second.

It's going down more than a day later than initially expected, but the final round of the 2018 BMW Championship is finally here.

After rain wiped out Sunday's play in suburban Philadelphia, the final round was pushed back to Monday. Slugger White, the Tour's vice president of rules and competition, said that Aronimink's staff would need at least 2 ½ hours of uninterrupted work to properly prepare the course for play.

PGA Tour policy states every feasible attempt must be made to complete 72 holes, but also that a final round can not begin on a Tuesday.

American Xander Schauffele and Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy shared second place, with Schauffele a strong candidate to be named the final Ryder Cup team selection on Monday by USA captain Jim Furyk.

Rose needs to win to displace American Dustin Johnson and become the 22nd man to be world number one since the rankings began in 1986.

Keegan Bradley is 30th and would be exempt for the first three major championships in 2019.

At the 221-yard par-3 14th, Woods hit a tee shot 209 yards at the green, setting himself up for the 10-foot putt for birdie. That projects him to move up 22 spots into the 30th position in the FedEx Cup, which would bump out Jordan Spieth.

But that is looking unlikely with a 70 per cent chance of rain until 11am on Monday before scattered thunderstorms are forecast to start from 2pm. The Tour Championship was expected to be Spieth's 25 event, but now he'd fall short of reaching that mark. He still was set for to be at the Tour Championship for the first time since 2013. Spieth also must qualify for the season finale to play the minimum 25 events this season or face a fine.

The PGA Tour has an off week coming up prior to the Tour Championship.
