Canadiens brass moving forward after Pacioretty trade”

The Canadiens dealt Pacioretty to the Vegas Golden Knights for forwards Tomas Tatar and Nick Suzuki and a second-round pick in 2019.

"I think it's a good thing for our team that we're moving on", said general manager Marc Bergevin from the Canadiens' golf tournament on Monday.

But luckily for Bergevin, he did get a solid return from the Vegas Golden Knights for Pacioretty, and the early reaction around the league is that the Canadiens might have won this trade despite not having any leverage with the situation. The 27-year-old has scored 20+ goals in four straight seasons though, including a career-high 29 in 2014-15.

The move was the culmination of months of questions surrounding the Habs and their now ex-captain, who has one season remaining on his current deal, and quickly signed an extension with the Golden Knights to the tune of four years and $28 million that will take him through the 2022-23 season. "But I see progress for our team, and I'm convinced we're going in the right direction".

Vegas announced the deal for the 29-year-old Pacioretty, who has played all 626 of his career National Hockey League games with Montreal, for whom he was named a captain in 2015. He has 448 points (226 goals) in 626 games spanning 2008-18.

But Musician Mic Manaras felt Montreal would be better off without Pacioretty. The Canadiens showed no interest in signing him to an extension despite the CT native's oft-repeated claims that he and his family are happy in Montreal and wanted to stay here. If he couldn't get a solid return for their captain who is also a perennial 30 goal scorer with a team friendly cap hit, it would probably be the last straw that puts his job in danger. "It sounds like both sides are going to be happy".

But the weight of the trade for Vegas goes beyond the two players and pick, as the entire scope of the swap has seen the Golden Knights essentially give up an additional three draft choices in the process.

"I'm not going to deny that he didn't perform up to par in Vegas, but it was a short period of time".

From now until the beginning of training camp, Bruins Insider Joe Haggerty is profiling players who will be on, or have a chance to be on, the 2018-19 Bruins.

Suzuki was a first-round draft choice in 2017 (13th overall) and he is listed as a centre although he has played all three forward positions, which makes him a ideal addition to a team that seems determined to fit square pegs into round holes.

Stockpiling picks is a good sign for Montreal, which expects to be competitive with a rebuilt offense and healthy seasons from Price and top defender Shea Weber.

The Montreal Canadiens are turning the page.

"We made changes, we brought in good new players and coaches", said Bergevin. "We have some good centers coming through the system, and with the departure of Max there's room on the wings too".
