Former Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif’s wife Kulsoom passes away in London

Former Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif’s wife Kulsoom passes away in London”

The newly elected Pakistani government of Imran Khan has made a decision to extend all help in bringing the mortal remains of Begum Kulsoom from London.

Kulsoom had contested and won the NA-120 seat, a traditional bastion of Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N), after it fell vacant due to her husband's disqualification. In August 2017, it was confirmed that Kulsoom was suffering from lymphoma (throat) cancer and was shifted to London for further treatment.

Kulsoom's political struggle against Gen (r) Musharraf's dictatorship was also acknowledged by now Prime Minister Imran Khan during a jalsa held previous year (30th April) in Karachi.

The former first lady "dauntlessly challenged the usurper when a lot of men backed out", daughter Maryam once remarked.

Former PML-N minister Khurram Dastagir Khan hailed Begum Kulsoom as a "dissenter against dictatorship" and a "courageous Pakistani".

But she was not sworn in as she was already overseas for cancer treatment.

Since then, Nawaz and Maryam have been making regular making trips to the United Kingdom to visit Kulsoom. The couple had four children - two sons and two daughters.

Leaders from across the political spectrum in Pakistan sent in their best wishes for Kulsoom during the length of her illness.

But some observers pointed out that Kulsoom Nawaz was no political novice. She was the sole lady to stand up in the face of Pervez Musharraf's dictatorship.

But life as a politician in her own right was not to be for Ms Nawaz.

Sharif, three-time prime minister, is now serving a 10-year jail term in Pakistan following his conviction by a court on corruption charges.

"In such stressful times, no other member of the party played such a crucial role, as she did".

"She may not have forayed into politics the way her husband or the Sharifs in general had, but whenever dire circumstances arose, she was with Nawaz Sharif".
