Hurricane Florence Set To Hit US East Coast”

Florence, the most powerful storm to menace the United States mainland this year, intensified into a Category 4 hurricane as it howled closer to the Carolinas on Monday (Sept 10), prompting evacuations of more than 1 million people to higher ground. According to the National Hurricane Center, the storm is expected to be a "large and extremely risky hurricane" when it arrives on the US coast. Tropical storms generate winds between 39 and 73 miles per hour, just below hurricane force. SC has been hit by three Category 4 storms: Hazel; Gracie, in 1959; and Hugo, in 1989.

South Carolina's price-gouging law is now in effect, as the state is on guard for anyone who may try to take advantage of the preparations for Hurricane Florence.

Acknowledging that it's "too soon" to know the storm's exact path, Northam mentioned that all models show Virginia will see significant impact.

For many, the challenge could be finding a safe refuge: If Florence slows to a crawl just off the coast, it could carry torrential rains up into the Appalachian mountains, causing flash floods, mudslides and other risky weather across a wide area.

North Carolina State University canceled classes beginning Sept. 12 at 5 p.m. until the evening of Sunday, Sept. 16, although dining and residence halls will remain open.

Hurricane Florence is intensifying and expected to transform into a major hurricane as it barrels toward the southeastern USA coast, where forecasters expect a life-threatening storm surge, major flooding and damaging winds this week.

"The largest threat to life from hurricanes is not the high winds". The northernmost landfall was made by Hazel, a devastating and deadly storm that struck close to the South Carolina/North Carolina border in October of 1954.

In Virginia, home to the world's largest sea base, the U.S. navy has ordered all ships to sea in preparation for the storm, where they can more safely ride out the violent wind and waves.

"This is going to be big", said Victoria Oliva, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Storms generally form over the equator, where the water temperature is especially high, then move north and west, pushed along by currents in the tropical Atlantic.

A mandatory evacuation was ordered for residents of Hatteras Island and some other areas of Dare County in North Carolina.

In announcing his evacuation order, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster said an estimated 1 million people would be fleeing the coast. While we are not expected to be directly impacted, swells created by Florence will propagate to our region. It was centered about 1,230 miles east-southeast of Cape Fear, North Carolina, and moving west at 13 mph.

Hurricane Olivia has triggered tropical storm warnings in Hawaii, where it will likely make landfall by Tuesday or Wednesday, forecasters say.
