Activists Raise Over $800,000 So Susan Collins Won't Support Kavanaugh”

She hasn't indicated how she might vote. "Incredibly, that's almost as much as Collins has in her own campaign account", said Matt McDermott, a pollster and senior analyst at the Democratic firm Whitman Insight Strategies.

Liberals who oppose Mr Kavanaugh's nomination have raised $900,000 (£690,000) for Senator Collins' opponent's campaign in the 2020 election, in a bid to pressurise her to vote against the nomination.

And they mean business: so far, they have raised more than $1 million, all of it earmarked for Collins' future opponent should she vote for Kavanaugh.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, speaks with Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh at her office, before a private meeting on Capitol Hill in Washington, Aug. 21, 2018.

Yesterday Senator Collins was asked about this controversial campaign by conservative news organization NewsMax.

The group said it will return all funds to donors if Collins votes against Kavanaugh.

For liberals concerned about what a seat for Kavanaugh would do to the court, Collins has been both a source of limited hope and frustration, expressing concerns about threats to Roe vs. Wade, while consulting with the Trump administration through the selection process. "Judge Kavanaugh kept his cool this week and demonstrated the qualities that I look for in a judge or a Supreme Court justice - good character, good temperament, high intelligence and respect for the law".

Marie Follayttar Smith, of Mainers for Accountable Leadership, said the organizers are not aware of any other fundraising campaigns that used similar tactics, but the groups wanted to try something different and thought of the idea during brainstorming sessions.

The vote tally also looks static among Senate Democrats, who number 49 in the chamber, including two independents who caucus with them. About 26,000 of the 36,000 donations as of Tuesday afternoon were $20.20, according to the website.

Collins and Republican Sen. If all Democrats and left-leaning independents vote "no", it would take two Republicans voting against Kavanaugh to sink the nomination. She also told reporters that Kavanaugh reassured her by saying he considers Roe v. Wade settled law, but in a 2003 email recently unearthed at his confirmation hearings he wrote he was "not sure" whether the case was settled law.

It looks as though all Senate Republicans will vote to confirm, with Vice President Mike Pence available if needed as a backup.

The Supreme Court is now split 4-4 between conservative and liberal justices.
