Hurricane Helene strengthens over the eastern Atlantic Ocean: NHC”

The Miami-based National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said that Isaac, packing winds of 75 miles per hour (mph) located near latitude 14.7 North, longitude 43.9 West and moving toward the west near 14 mph.

Hurricane Helene continues to gain in strength over the eastern Atlantic Ocean, with additional strengthening expected during the next day or so, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in its latest advisory on Sunday.

The storm is moving towards the west at 11km/h, and is forecast to drench a large swath of the US East Coast running from northern Florida to New Jersey.

Local impacts from Florence are not expected, according to the National Weather Service Tallahassee. The storm's winds had increased to 140 miles per hour by Monday afternoon.

"Presume that a major hurricane is going to hit right smack dab in the middle of SC".

Unfortunately, North Carolina is just days away from seeing another Hugo-like landfall with the troubling threat of days of Hurricane Harvey-like flooding long after the system make landfall in the Carolinas. "It is an extremely, dangerous, life-threatening, historic hurricane", said North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper.

Florence is forecasted to remain an "extremely risky major hurricane" through Thursday, the day when it's expected to reach the East Coast. McMaster on Sunday predicted Florence will likely deliver "a strong hit on SC", though he cautioned that it's still uncertain how bad the Palmetto State will be affected.

With little wind shear to pull the storm apart, hurricane-strength winds have been expanding to 40 miles (64 kilometers) from the eye of the storm, and tropical-storm-force winds 150 miles from the center. Maximum sustained winds are near 75 miles per hour.

The storm is now around 400 miles south of Bermuda and is moving at 16 mph (26 kph).

President Donald Trump says the safety of the American people is his "absolute highest priority" as Hurricane Florence takes aim at portions of the East Coast.

Southeastern North Carolina remains in the middle of the storm's "cone of uncertainty", with the cone extending from roughly Hilton Head, S.C., in the south to the Chesapeake Bay in the north.

The hurricane's impacts could range from a strong storm surge to flooding from torrential rainfall and hurricane-force winds. SC emergency management officials said they were "preparing for the possibility of a large-scale disaster".

South Carolina's governor ordered the state's entire coastline evacuated starting at noon Tuesday and predicted that 1 million people would flee as highways reverse directions.

"All of the evidence points to an extreme disaster in the making in the mid-East Coast/Carolina region", said Bryan Norcross, a senior hurricane specialist with the Weather Channel.
