North Carolina Issues First-of-Kind State Evacuation Order Due to Hurricane”

Approximately 2,000 South Carolina National Guard Soldiers and Airmen were activated and are now emplaced throughout the Palmetto state September 11, 2018 in preparation for landfall of Hurricane Florence. Those states plus Maryland and Washington DC have all declared a state of emergency.

It likely goes without saying that hurricanes produce punishing, potentially deadly winds. Upon immediate landfall, the threats are you standard hurricane threats - storm surge, strong winds, tornadoes. "That, folks, is extremely life-threatening".

A state of emergency has been declared in three U.S. states, as the east coast braces for the arrival of category five storm Florence.

The storm's first effects were already apparent on barrier islands as risky rip currents hit beaches and seawater flowed over a state highway. She said her house, built in 2009 in Buxton, North Carolina, is on a ridge and built to withstand a hurricane.

The National Hurricane Centre said it was a potentially catastrophic Category-4 storm, but was expected to keep drawing energy from the warm water and intensify to near Category 5, which means winds of 157 miles per hour or higher.

He added: 'The waves and the wind this storm may bring is nothing like you've ever seen.

The company is also preparing for potential shutdown of nuclear reactors at least two hours before the arrival of hurricane-force winds.

Smithfield Foods Inc said it would shut down the world's largest hog-slaughtering facility in Tar Heel, North Carolina, on Thursday and Friday due to the hurricane. Massive waves from the hurricane will make the rush of water even more unsafe and damaging, the National Hurricane Center warned.

Liz Browning Fox was planning to ride out the storm nevertheless on the Outer Banks. More than 1 million residents have been ordered to evacuate from coastal areas of the three states, closing university campuses, schools and factories.

"Winds have decreased a little bit this morning down to 130mph but that's only because it's undergone what's called an eyewall replacement cycle that temporarily weakens the storm".

Life-threatening storm surges of up to a staggering 13 feet in some places were also forecast.

By tomorrow afternoon, she said, the region may already start to see damage. The storm is moving west-northwest at 17 mph and is 785 miles east-southeast of Cape Fear, North Carolina. There can still be changes to the track of the storm; some areas will fare better than predicted and other regions may fare worse.

Michelle Stober loaded up valuables on Tuesday at her home on Wrightsville Beach to take back to her primary residence in Cary, North Carolina.

Hurricane-force winds (74 to 95 mph) are now extending out up to 60 miles from the center of the storm, and tropical-storm-force winds are being felt as much as 175 miles around the storm.

Florence has forced people to cut their holidays short along the coast, while the storm's projected path includes half a dozen nuclear power plants, pits holding coal-ash and other industrial waste, and numerous pig farms that store animal waste in huge lagoons.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam's evacuation order applies to about 245,000 people, including parts of the Hampton Roads area and Eastern Shore.
