Pope: Great Accuser Has Been Unchained and is Attacking Bishops'”

Wuerl submitted his resignation three years ago, but stayed on working at the Vatican's request. Many have suggested Wuerl must have known about the allegations, and intentionally did not act. The cardinal, who is 77, handed the pope his resignation when he turned 75, as is standard practice. "At issue is how to begin effectively to bring a new level of healing to survivors who have personally suffered so much and to the faithful entrusted to our care who have also been wounded by the shame of these awful actions and have questions about their bishop's ability to provide the necessary leadership". However, a pope is not obliged to accept such a resignation and Pope Francis has essentially kept Cardinal Wuerl in office in Washington ever since. He continued - It is clear that some decision, sooner rather than later, on my part, is an essential aspect so that the church can move forward.

Pope Francis is summoning all bishops conference presidents for a February summit to discuss preventing clerical sexual abuse against children - evidence that he realises the scandal is global and that inaction threatens to undermine his legacy.

With the Catholic Church in crisis once again over clerical sex abuse and cover-up, Pope Francis will meet on Thursday with USA cardinals and bishops who are demanding to know how one of their own was able to climb the clerical ranks despite allegations that he slept with seminarians.

A statement released by the Pope's council of nine cardinals said it was "aware that in the current debate" of recent weeks the Holy See is about to issue "necessary clarifications".

Christian blogger, speaker and writer for The Daily Wire, Matt Walsh joined Glenn on today's episode of "The Glenn Beck Radio Program", to react to the pope's controversial speech and weigh in on the far-reaching sexual abuse scandals within the church.

The planned Vatican meeting is believed to be unprecedented, indicating that the church recognises that clergy sex abuse is a global problem - potentially even in non-Western countries where the church maintains strong social power and cases have not come to light in great number.

Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano sparked a firestorm last month when he claimed Francis had personally ignored abuse allegations against prominent U.S. cardinal Theodore McCarrick for 5 years.

The Vatican said Tuesday the meeting would be headed by Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, head of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and also include Francis' top sex abuse adviser, Cardinal Sean O'Malley.

DiNardo has also said Vigano's accusations deserve answers.
