Trump Makes False GDP Claim, Reports 'Fox Business'”

"The GDP Rate (4.2%) is higher than the Unemployment Rate (3.9%) for the first time in over 100 years!" the president said in a tweet.

Gasparino was writing in response to a tweet from Wall Street Journal columnist Kimberley Strassel.

A new question was added to that category over the weekend when former President Barack Obama returned to the stump to campaign for Democrats in the midterm elections: Could Donald Trump have beaten Obama in an election for president?

On Monday morning, Trump claimed on Twitter that "The GDP Rate (4.2%) is higher than the Unemployment Rate (3.9%) for the first time in over 100 years!" Sanders stated that while the numbers were true, the time frame was incorrect.

Standing behind the same podium where the former White House press secretary Sean Spicer once falsely claimed that Trump's inauguration drew the largest crowd there had ever been, Hassett thanked the reporter for the chance to set the record straight. Small-business owners, as a whole, became far more optimistic about the economy after Trump's election. There is also the related unknown of whether his outbursts and erratic nature are scaring off some voters who otherwise might be inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt if they feel good about the economy.

"It makes the story about the "are you honest and trustworthy piece" and not the "how is the economy doing piece".

"By making it about some fact that is not a fact, it takes it away from his economic message".

Hillary couldn't win on Obama's record: Lastly, if Obama's economy was so great, why couldn't Hillary Clinton ride the wave into the presidency like George H.W. Bush was able to do with Ronald Reagan? You've seen a steady march upward in the total number of jobs, a steady march downward in the unemployment rate, but Hassett was trying to show some different graphs where you show a turnaround beginning right around November 2016 when Donald Trump was elected. "And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations", Obama said in April of 2008.

Inside Trump's wider drop in approval, his rating among independents tumbled from 47% to 31% since August, the kind of number that could do real damage when voters go to the polls. Seventy percent say the economy is good or excellent, yet the president's approval rating, his job approval rating - below 40 percent in that and some other surveys.

That's because data shows that declines in a president's approval rating typically respond to a drop in the national vote for his party in the House of Representatives.

Obama's speech was part of a carefully coordinated strategy to win back a House majority for Democrats. Public appearances at the briefings are typically used to praise Trump. Hassett's upbeat messaging is a good place to start.
