'60 Minutes' Executive Producer Jeff Fager to Step Down Amid Controversy

'60 Minutes' Executive Producer Jeff Fager to Step Down Amid Controversy”

CBS News on Wednesday fired "60 Minutes" top executive Jeff Fager, who has been under investigation following reports that he groped women at parties and tolerated an abusive workplace.

Duncan, who has been tasked with reporting on both Fager and Moonves for CBS News these past few days, then went one step further and revealed the exchange that led to Fager's exit.

The New Yorker this summer reported allegations that Fager, who had been at CBS News for more than three decades, touched employees inappropriately and enabled a culture of bad behavior inside the organization.

CBS said in an internal memo that, although the allegations are not directly related to Fager's termination, the company is still conducting an independent investigation into the matter.

Longtime producer of the popular CBS News program "60 Minutes", Jeff Fager, stepped down from his position on Wednesday, after violating "company policy", new memos show.

He said his contract terminated early "because I sent a text message to one of our own CBS reporters demanding that she be fair in covering the story".

It was shortly after outlets began to pick up the news of Fager's exit that he released a statement of his own, in light of CBS News' refusing to comment on his specific violation.

He ended, "One such note should not result in termination after 36 years, but it did".

At the end of Duncan's report, anchor Jeff Glor said to her, "That message was unacceptable".

Fager responded to Duncan's request for comment, a journalistic standard, with an angry response telling the reporter she would be "held responsible for harming me" if she repeated the allegations without her own reporting on the subject.

Steve Kroft, a veteran correspondent on "60 Minutes", told CNN, "Over the years Jeff Fager has done a remarkable job managing '60 Minutes, ' but the text message to Jericka Duncan was threatening and inappropriate". In 2011 he was named the first ever chairman of CBS News, launching the current iteration of "CBS This Morning" during his tenure.

But Fager has said that women have made significant advances at the broadcast, to the point where a majority its producers and associate producers are now women.

Mr Fager, 63, called the claims "false", and said they "do not stand up to editorial scrutiny".

The text message to Duncan was a warning over the network's coverage of the sexual harassment accusations against him. A second Farrow article last week alleged that Fager had groped an employee at a company event.
