Ericsson and Industry Partners Advance 5G Commercial Readiness in North America content=”

Announced in quick succession, the two 5G deals mean T-Mobile, which operates the third-biggest mobile network in the USA, will spend at least $7 billion on 5G deployment with Europe's two main network equipment vendors.

This milestone follows on the heels of several significant announcements that are accelerating the deployment of commercial 5G networks including the first end-to-end multi-vendor 5G commercial network data call over licenced 3.5GHz in July 2018. On Tuesday, the nation's third largest wireless provider matched that investment through a similar agreement with Ericsson.

Alongside hardware, Ericsson will also provide digital services, including dynamic orchestration and business support systems (BSS), along with its Ericsson Cloud Core product, enabling T-Mobile to more easily launch 5G experiences to its customers.

"While the other guys just make promises, we're putting our money where our mouth is", said Neville Ray, T-Mobile's chief technology officer, in a typically combative statement.

As the United States races toward commercial 5G services, Ericsson achieves significant milestones with AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile on the road to making 5G a reality for consumers. This comes on top of another $3.5 billion deal T-Mobile signed with Nokia.

"Initially by having the 5G network ready, what that enables us to do is to trial and test the early versions of the handsets and dongles and mobile hotspots and tablets, and the manufacturers come through and test them outside of the lab environment and in a commercial environment", Telstra CEO Andy Penn told ZDNet.

"We have recently made a decision to increase our investments in the U.S. to be closer to our leading customers and better support them with their accelerated 5G deployments; thereby bringing 5G to life for consumers and enterprises across the country", said Niklas Heuveldop, Head of Ericsson North America.

Indeed, this deal follows one the U.S. wireless operator made with Nokia, earlier in the year. These are all meant to help T-Mobile bridge the gap between its current nationwide LTE Advanced network to a functioning 5G network faster than any of its competitors. "Together with our partners we are continuing to prove the readiness of both the underlying technology and the ecosystem". Crucial to AT&T's rapid deployment plans is the use of key 5G technologies using millimeter wave spectrum to serve the connectivity needs of those in dense urban environments.

And there are still hurdles to overcome, not least 5G's limited range and penetration.
