Hurricane Florence Marches Toward The Carolinas As Residents Flee

Hurricane Florence Marches Toward The Carolinas As Residents Flee”

Florence is forecast to crawl up to the North Carolina coast late this week and turn slowly left - a development that would smash the Tar Heel State with life-threatening storm surge, catastrophic winds and inundating rain while also endangering a large portion of SC.

Tropical storm-force winds extended 195 miles from Florence's center, and hurricane-force winds reached out 70 miles.

The storm is moving west, northwest at 17 miles per hour. It was located father north in the Atlantic than any other storm to ever hit the Carolinas, so what we're forecasting is unprecedented.

The National Weather Service said 5.25 million people live in areas under hurricane warnings or watches, and 4.9 million live in places covered by tropical storm warnings or watches.

However, it's not too late to prepare for Hurricane Florence - or any other storm that may move through Coweta County.

Forecasters said parts of North Carolina could get 20in of rain, if not more, with as much as 10in elsewhere in the state and in Virginia, parts of Maryland and Washington DC.

Mayor Joe Benson of Carolina Beach, a small town near Wilmington with a permanent population of about 6,300, said he believes half of the residents have stayed on the island.

"A storm with the track of Florence is unprecedented".

Jeff Byard of the Federal Emergency Management Agency said it was imperative locals heed the evacuation warnings.

The monster storm showed signs of slowing down as it inched closer to the USA, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The ocean waters that Florence is travelling over are about 2.7 degrees (1.5 degrees Celsius) warmer than normal, McNoldy said.

Emlaw explained that there is a wide range of possibilities in rainfall amounts in the Lowcountry because no one knows whether the storm will stall offshore or move inland.

In a videotaped message from the White House, US President Donald Trump said the government is fully prepared for Florence but urged people to "get out of its way".

Forecasters said Wednesday that Florence's wind field is expanding, making it a large, stable hurricane with a clearly defined eye at its center. It is the most unsafe of three tropical systems in the Atlantic.

Astronauts at the International Space Station, for example, struggled to fit the enormous storm into one frame. Second, the storm is likely to cause "life-threatening freshwater flooding from a prolonged and exceptionally heavy rainfall event" across the state, both on the coast and in the interior. "That means the more trees that could fall, the more power outages", National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham said.

"A storm like this typically causes an increase in fuel purchases in the market and a slowdown in retail demand".

President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency in North and SC, thus facilitating federal aid to those states. Cars and trucks full of people and belongings streamed inland.
