Hurricane Florence Shifts Course, Will Make a 'Grand Tour' of Southeastern States

Hurricane Florence Shifts Course, Will Make a 'Grand Tour' of Southeastern States”

Hurricane Florence, heading for the Carolinas, "will likely be the storm of a lifetime" for areas of the coast, according to the National Weather Service early Wednesday.

Forecast models show the storm slowing to a crawl off the North Carolina coast late on Thursday or Friday and make a southern turn.

Florence's winds in the afternoon were down slightly to 125 miles per hour (205 kph), from a high of 140 miles per hour, and the Category 4 storm fell to a Category 3.

But despite the potentially devastating hurricane, forecast to make landfall on Friday with 130mph winds, people tried to offer some "relief" in the silence before the storm.

A crew of about 80 rescuers from Montgomery County is headed to SC to help deal with Hurricane Florence and its aftermath.

Though Florence won't be making landfall until Friday, tropical-storm-force winds - 39 to 73 miles per hour (63 to 117 km/h) - will begin whipping through coastal regions as early as tomorrow, making it exceptionally unsafe to be outside, Graham said.

Communities in Florence's path could lose electricity for weeks due to downed power lines and flooded equipment, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Brock Long said. A hurricane's counterclockwise rotation mean Florence's strongest and heaviest rain bands will be northwest of the eye - right over Central North Carolina.

Even with a slightly revised southward track, Hurricane Florence still poses a significant threat to central North Carolina and Alamance County.

The threat has sparked a rush of evacuation efforts in SC and North Carolina, with more than a million people urged to get out of Florence's way. Parts of North Carolina could get 40 inches (1 metre) of rain.

'I can't emphasise enough the potential for unbelievable damage from wind, storm surge and inland flooding with this storm'.

The forecasters also expect that there will be a 90 percent chance of tropical storm force winds for parts of the storm.

The storm's 175-mile (282 km) wide "cone of probability" suggests the storm will likely hit North Carolina's coast near Cape Fear, but storms fall outside the cone one-third of the time, according to The Weather Channel.

President Donald Trump says his administration is "as ready as anybody has ever been", to respond to the storm.

He warned residents to take precautions "because once this storm is upon us, we're not going to be able to send emergency personnel out to rescue you".

Michael Kennedy, an engineer at Boeing, said he planned to leave on Tuesday for his parents' home in Atlanta, Georgia.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster on Monday ordered the mandatory evacuation of one million coastal residents.

"Florence is intensifying", said North Carolina's Governor Roy Cooper, adding: "This storm is strong, and its gettings stronger". As it turns into southern SC.

Kathleen O'Neal, a resident of Ocracoke Island in North Carolina's Barrier Islands, said she, her husband and son would ride out the storm.
