Microsoft Edge Is Trying To Warn People Off Firefox And Chrome

Microsoft Edge Is Trying To Warn People Off Firefox And Chrome”

As reported by The Verge, Microsoft has inserted these pop-ups in the latest Windows 10 test builds that are now available to Windows Insiders.

You already have Microsoft Edge - the safer, faster browser for Windows 10.

In my opinion, the operating system you choose to run should remain independent of the software you choose to install, but Microsoft clearly disagrees with that view based on a new tweak to Windows 10. Interestingly, this move by the Redmond, Washington-headquartered company comes right ahead of the release of Windows 10 October 2018 Update. By going into Apps & Features in the Apps pages within the Settings app, you can turn these prompts off.

An image of the offending pop-up was shared in a tweet by user Sean Hoffman.

Instead of disabling the app recommendations by default, Microsoft seems to be enabling them by default.

The app suggestions feature is part of the "Apps & Features" setting in the Settings app, where you can control whether or not you can install apps from outside the Microsoft Store.

Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox might be at the top of the browser thrones, but Microsoft has recently taken some big steps to push their Edge browser into the conversation. In a statement to CNET, Microsoft referred to its Windows test programme, and said, "We're now testing this functionality with insiders only".

The message that pops up calls itself a "warning", but the only reason it's warning you to use Edge is that Microsoft would prefer you do so. How do you get those people to give Edge a chance?

Here's the amusing thing: Despite all these tricks, Edge only has about 4% of the browser market. If someone is downloading Chrome or Firefox, they've already made their choice as to what browser they want to use. People use Windows in the real world to run a variety of applications, not just connect to Microsoft services in half-baked "Universal" apps, "Metro" apps, or whatever we're calling them now. There is a button that allows users to open the Edge browser instead of installing Firefox or Chrome. To do that requires focusing on making Edge better than the alternatives and marketing it as such.
