Mystics fall short of title as Storm sweep WNBA Finals”

Breanna Stewart led the Seattle Storm to their WNBA title Wednesday night, scoring 30 points in a 98-82 victory over the Washington Mystics in Game 3 of the best-of-five series.

The ultra-confident, steely cool Stewart had a feeling about this game, just as she had a feeling about this series and this season. In Game 4, in addition to losing Sue Bird to a broken nose, the Storm relinquished a 17-point lead over the course of three quarters.

Natasha Howard added career-high 29 points and 14 rebounds for the Storm and first-year coach Dan Hughes.

It's the Western Conference franchise's third National Basketball Association championship after Australian Lauren Jackson led the side to titles in 2004 and 2010.

"You can't be unsuccessful if you're in the Finals", Kristi Toliver said. I knew she was that elite level player and more importantly that elite level competitor that wanted to be the best.

The Storm finished the period ahead 20-16 because they were 4 of 9 on 3-pointers while Washington was 2 of 5.

"It doesn't feel real yet, honestly", WNBA Finals MVP Breanna Stewart said after the game. "If I'm exhausted, she can guard [Elena] Delle Donne, and if she's exhausted, I can do it". In 2015, as she's spoken about often through this title run, she was an unrestricted free agent and had given a lot of thought into leaving Seattle. It's been a year of vulnerability and strength for the young star, and as she stood on the court clutching her trophy all she could do was smile and shrug.

After trailing 69-53 entering the fourth quarter, the Mystics rallied to within five points at 72-67 on a 3-pointer by Tierra Ruffin-Pratt with 6:49 remaining. "I felt more and more uncomfortable as we kept going". We have only played together with this core group basically for two years, and we have some reinforcements coming next year.

"They definitely supported us during the season.to see the turnout at the playoffs, it was huge for us", Bird said.

"We thought, 'Oh, crap, what kind of year is this going to be?'" Bird reminisced.

Rounding out the first team were Dallas center Liz Cambage and Mystics' forward Elena Delle Donne. "We all know that we're happy and we're proud of where we were at, but we want to be better and I don't think you have to say that".

Howard was a deep reserve for Minnesota during the Lynx's title run previous year, averaging 1.1 points and 0.9 points. "I think everybody knows". Now I can go to the bar and order her everything she needs.

What was billed as a battle between two of the league's most lethal three-point shooting teams turned into a one-sided display for the Storm.
