Tennis umpires consider forming union, boycotting over Serena Williams drama

Tennis umpires consider forming union, boycotting over Serena Williams drama”

That has led to talk of a boycott, with the Guardian reporting that umpires feel Ramos was "hung out to dry" while "no one is standing up for officials", lending renewed energy to long-standing discussions about unionizing.

And Ramos has defended his actions by insisting that he can not ignore certain rules during matches.

The officials are further enraged by the fact that it took International Tennis Federation (ITF) 48 hours to come to Ramos' support.

In terrible scenes after Osaka's historic grand slam triumph, the 20-year-old burst into tears as fans voiced their displeasure at the way Serena had lost.

The first Japanese player to win a grand slam admitted she was "a little bit sad" her US Open triumph ended in boos after Serena was embroiled in a controversial row with the umpire.

"Character is the essence of what was going on there, she was so upset about that, those kids (Serena and Venus) have been brought up to play by the rules. The incidents on the court are not the issue", he added.

The CEO of USTA, the governing body of tennis in the USA, was asked if she believes female players are held to different standards than men. Open Finals is the issue of coaching during a game.

Ramos followed the rule book to a tee.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) on Monday defended Ramos, backing the umpire for the way he handled the situation in hard circumstances.

Here's Williams after Saturday's match.

There are men out here that do a lot worse but because I'm a woman, because I'm a woman you're going to take this away from me? Williams shot back and called him a "liar" and a "thief".

In an interview with his good friend and Tribuna Expresso journalist Miguel Seabra, Ramos said he is doing "fine" and denying that he employs any sort of racist or sexist double standard in his matches.

Williams was fined $17,000 Sunday by the tournament referee's office for her coaching, racket destruction and verbal abuse infractions.

Another major debate arising post-U.S.

Other umpires are coming out in support of Ramos and are reported to be discussing a possible boycott of Serena Williams' matches.

"Make your point, shout, and scream, whatever and get the code violation but then know when to stop and get on with it".

While it is possible that the current crop of young tennis players may start asking umpires for an apology when their ball is called out, it seems more likely that the 2018 US Open women's singles final will be remembered as a catalyst for future change in the sport of professional tennis.

"I think that is a bigger issue than what actually happened on Saturday night in that US Open final".

It is tradition that in addition to the finalists, the chair umpire who oversees the final is also acknowledged at the end of the match.
