Time almost up: Fierce Hurricane Florence aims at Southeast - Story | WFLD”

A hurricane warning is in effect for South Santee River, SC, north to Duck, NC, and the Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds. Maximum sustained winds are near 110 miles per hour (175 km/h) with higher gusts. "We are totally prepared", Trump said at the White House.

Locals in the Carolina states have said they have little trust in the authorities and fear they would not get much support from central government should the area be devastated by the hurricane, given the response to the devastation caused by Maria to Puerto Rico past year.

The projected path shows the storm moving from near Wilmington, North Carolina to near Columbia, South Carolina.

Wind and the tidal surge will be the biggest issues for airports in the coastal Carolinas, FlightAware's Orsi said.

Additionally, the National Hurricane Center has not changed its forecast for the storm surge - with up to 13 feet possible - or rainfall - with up to 40 inches dumped in some spots.

Tropical Storm Isaac was east of the Lesser Antilles and expected to pass south of Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and Cuba, while Hurricane Helene was moving northward away from land.

"Listen, I think all of that's going to happen", Hannity said.

Hurricane conditions will likely hit the Carolina coast on Thursday night or early Friday.

However, a Cat 2 storm's wind speed is "extremely unsafe", according to the National Hurricane Center, capable of ripping trees from the ground, wreaking major roof damage on homes and causing power outages that may last weeks and affect three million households.

Florence is one of the strongest hurricanes on the eastern seaboard in decades, and will bring a triple threat of risky storm surge, flooding and hurricane-force winds in parts of the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic states.

NOAA's National Hurricane Center (NHC) said "microwave overpass indicated that the convection over the southern and southeastern portions of the storm is still disrupted, and that the eyewall was open to the southeast".

Forecasters anxious the storm's damage will be all the worse if it lingers on the coast.

Weather Underground meteorology director Jeff Masters said Florence eventually could strike as a Category 1 with winds less than 100 miles per hour (160 kph), but that's still enough to cause at least $1 billion in damage.

Airlines canceled about 1,200 flights and counting, and some airports in the Carolinas virtually shut down.

"There is still time to leave".

It's unclear exactly how many people fled, but more than 1.7 million people in the Carolinas and Virginia were warned to clear out.

At 11 a.m., Florence was spinning less than 200 miles from the coast.

"Honestly, it tears me up thinking that what if in the end of this, this is all we have left", Jones said.

"While Florence has weakened below major hurricane intensity, the wind field of the hurricane continues to grow in size", the NHC added.

Jeff Byard, an administrator at the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said: "Do you want to get hit with a train or do you want to get hit with a cement truck?"

A power outage model run at the University of MI projects that 3.2 million customers will be without electricity because of the storm, mostly in the eastern half of North Carolina.
