US Open champion Djokovic: ‘I owe Federer, Nadal’

US Open champion Djokovic: ‘I owe Federer, Nadal’”

Novak Djokovic swapped his racket for doughnuts as the men's 2018 US Open champion took to the streets of New York City as part of his trophy tour.

If he beats del Potro, Djokovic will equal Pete Sampras for third place among men for major singles titles, trailing only Roger Federer's 20 and Rafael Nadal's 17.

It emerged on Sunday night, when the new US Open champion revealed that a five-day hiking trip with wife Jelena had been the inspiration behind his back-to-back grand-slam titles.

Naomi Osaka vaulted 12 spots to a career-high No. 7 in the WTA rankings following her first career Grand Slam title.

Novak Djokovic was thrilled to match Pete Sampras with a 14th Grand Slam title at the US Open yesterday, but he said it's Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal who have made him the player he is.

Over the past eight weeks Djokovic has resembled the player that held all four major titles at the same time in 2016 and the $3.8 million ($AU5.3 million) winner's cheque lifted him above Federer as the leader in career prize money. He was barking at himself, at his entourage, at a crowd vocally supporting his opponent, Juan Martin del Potro. He almost quit tennis in 2015, after four wrist surgeries that wouldn't let him regain the form that carried him past Roger Federer to win the 2009 U.S. Open. Since then, he's missed extensive time with injuries to both wrists.

The Serb collected his 14th grand slam title and second in a row with a 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 victory over Juan Martin del Potro on Monday (AEST).

Del Potro is forced into an error on the next point, but he digs out a drop shot on the next point and Djokovic puts a backhand volley wide of the mark. "I'm glad I managed to do that", Djokovic added.

To his credit, Del Potro rallied again to recover a break in the third set, but Djokovic was simply too good and sealed the match with a smash before collapsing in delight.

Del Potro - the third seed - had earlier lauded Djokovic, telling ESPN: "So happy to play in the final against this magnificent idol".

"He is more hard to move, skidding and changing direction because of the height, so I tried to get rid of him as much as possible".

The tension and fireworks of the Osaka-Williams clash were left behind during a relatively calm and composed baseline battle between two friends and familiar foes, who had played each other 18 times, with Djokovic holding a commanding 14-4 edge.

In turn, Djokovic spoke of his admiration for the Argentine, who has endured a raft of injuries since his sole Grand Slam title in NY. I don't see it's necessary really to debate that.

Amidst the searing heat and disturbing humidity of NY for the past two weeks, Djokovic battled through and rose above it all to shine under the Arthur Ashe Stadium lights for the third time.
