Erdogan warns any Idlib attack will affect Europe

Erdogan warns any Idlib attack will affect Europe”

Damascus, backed by Iran and Russian Federation, is preparing a major offensive on Idlib and other areas of northwest Syria to bring them under regime control.

On Friday at a summit in Tehran, the presidents of Russia, Iran and Turkey could not agree on staving off military action in the province.

But he said Russia's President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan were working hard to find a solution. On numerous occasions, Damascus has resorted to the use of chemical weapons, including nerve agents, in its efforts to regain territory.

A second rebel commander said: "They are getting new shipments of munitions - they don't need more than munitions".

"We would like to warn the United States and its allies against new unsafe steps", Zakharova added.

The threat of force comes after Russian Federation and Iran brushed off objections from the USA and Turkey to back a Syrian operation to wrest Idlib from some 70,000 opposition militants. The Russian defence ministry, citing Idlib residents, said film crews from several Middle Eastern TV channels - as well as "a regional branch of a leading U.S. news channel" - had arrived for the shoot in the city of Jisr al-Shughur in Idlib.

"We go wherever it's safe", said the man in his 30s. "But I think that you do have to look at the fact that we will abide by the chemical weapons prohibition and support it".

Trump has twice ordered USA -led strikes against targets in Syria in response to what Washington called the Assad government's use of chemical weapons against civilians. Assad "has been warned", Mattis said. "He's been warned and so we'll see if he's wised up", Mattis added.

Mattis declined to confirm whether he has been in consultations with the United Kingdom or France on any military response. "It must not be transformed into a bloodbath".

That has prompted an estimated 30,452 people to be displaced within Idlib and parts of adjacent Hama province between September 1 and 9, the UN's humanitarian coordination agency (OCHA) said Monday.

Syrian government and Russian warplanes began air strikes in Idlib last week in a possible prelude to a full-scale offensive.

He urged the West, including the USA, to join hands in stopping a possible attack on Idlib. The US is concerned they could eventually be used to launch another chemical attack as well as a conventional assault.

"There needs to be ways of dealing with this problem that don't turn the next few months in Idlib into the worst humanitarian catastrophe with the biggest loss of life in the 21st century", Mark Lowcock told reporters in Geneva.

Haley said the Astana process has failed "to stop the violence or to promote a political solution".
