Preparation And Resilience As Hurricane Florence Approaches

Preparation And Resilience As Hurricane Florence Approaches”

Forecasters have warned of life-threatening storm surges, catastrophic flooding, damaging winds, and risky rip currents along the coastlines of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.

Normally when we talk about the potential for hurricane damage, we talk about the impact of storm surges and high winds - both of which are, to be sure, incredibly unsafe in their own right.

"It's all going to be predicated on where the damage is at, in terms of how and where we deploy our resources", said Penn.

SC officials say more than 400,000 people have evacuated the state's coast and more than 4,000 people have taken refuge in shelters as Hurricane Florence approaches.

Their entire neighborhood evacuated in Wilmington, North Carolina, David and Janelle Garrigus planned to ride out Florence at their daughter's one-bedroom apartment in Charlotte.

The NHC notes that amount of rainfall would "produce catastrophic flash flooding and prolonged significant river flooding".

The News & Observer reports that the storm's path shifted early Wednesday and it is now bearing down on southern North Carolina and northern SC, where it could dump up to 40 inches of rain in places.

Even though the storm's category fell from a 4 to a 2 Wednesday (local time), forecasters stressed the category is only an evaluation of the storm's peak winds in a very narrow core near the center of the storm. Airlines had canceled almost 1,000 flights and counting.

More than 1 million people have been ordered to evacuate the coastlines of the Carolinas and Virginia.

At 11 a.m., the storm was located about 520 miles east of Myrtle Beach, S.C., moving northwest at 15 mph with 130 sustained winds, forecasters said. "The storm surge forecast associated with this storm has not changed".

States up and down the East Coast have a great potential for severe weather. Similar declarations were made earlier in North and South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency on the federal level Tuesday for the Carolinas and Virginia.

McMaster and state officials urged residents eager to return home to be patient, stressing Florence will be a long-term event, with prolonged river flooding, power outages and road closures likely to extend well into next week.

Body surfer Andrew Vanotteren, of Savannah, Ga., crashes into waves from Hurricane Florence, Wednesday, Sept., 12, 2018, on the south beach of Tybee Island, Ga.

Heavy rainbands along with tropical storm-force winds are spreading across the outer banks and coastal southeastern North Carolina, the NHC said on Thursday.

Hurricanes are massive storm systems that form over warm ocean waters and move toward land.

The impact of storm surge on the coast will depend on whether the storm's arrival coincides with high tide.

Florence's weakening as it neared the coast created tension between some who left home and authorities who anxious that the storm could still be deadly. Storm winds could intensify through the day and tonight, but weaken slightly Thursday as it nears the coast.

An estimated 10 million people live in areas expected to be under a hurricane or storm advisory, according to the U.S. Weather Prediction Centre, and businesses and homes in the storm's path were boarded up in anticipation.
