THREATENING STORM: Hurricane Florence makes landfall in North Carolina”

Hurricane Florence remains on track to bring life-threatening storm surge and rainfall to coastal North and SC, the National Weather Service says.

The storm made landfall at Wrightsville Beach at 7:15 a.m., with maximum sustained winds of 90 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The powerful storm inundated coastal streets and left tens of thousands without power. Forecasters said catastrophic freshwater flooding is expected well inland over the next few days as Florence crawls westward across the Carolinas all weekend.

Screaming winds bent trees and raindrops flew sideways as Florence's leading edge battered the Carolina coast Thursday.

Weather Underground meteorology director Jeff Masters said Florence eventually could strike as merely a Category 1 hurricane with winds less than 100 miles per hour (160 kph), but that's still enough to cause at least $1 billion in damage. People were stuck in their cars, attics and rooftops, waiting for rescuers in boats.

The precipitation from Florence will start midday Thursday and then it will rain for four days, said CNN Meteorologist Tom Sater.More than 1 million people are under mandatory evacuations in Virginia and the Carolinas, where up to 40 inches of rain could fall. The storm's slowing forward movement and heavy rains had Gov. Roy Cooper warning of an impending disaster.

"Surviving this storm will be a test of endurance, teamwork, common sense and patience", he warned.

New Hanover County officials said Thursday morning that it could accept more residents seeking shelter at Trask Middle School, Eaton Elementary School, Codington Elementary School, the Johnson Pre-K Center and Noble Middle School. Heavy rains were forecast to extend into the Appalachian mountains, affecting parts of Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia. The shelter will open Wednesday night, but officials warn people going there to be prepared to be evacuate in the event of power loss.

There is also a "slight" risk of tornadoes along the coastal region between Southport and Surf City, along with a "marginal" risk several miles inland, through Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender counties, according to the National Weather Service.

The Neuse River in New Bern, North Carolina yesterday began to flow over its banks, triggering flooding as waters continued to rise from torrential rainfall.

"We've planned for this. But we are going to do everything we can".

"When that last ferry pulls out ... it's unnerving to see it pull away and know, 'That's the last chance I have of getting off this island, '" she said Wednesday.

"So we've told people if they decide to stay, at some point they're going to be on their own and we might not be back - able to get them until the storm is gone because there will be electrical lines down all over the place from all the rain".

In a new demonstration of the network's CGI capabilities, hosts have presented from the centre of a digital storm surge to demonstrate the hurricane's damaging potential.

Life-threatening storm surges of up to 13 feet (4m) have been forecast in some areas when the monster storm eventually makes landfall in North and SC.

The storm remained a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 100 miles per hour.

- Hurricane Florence remains a Category 2 storm as it makes its approaches to the Carolinas. Residents are still recovering from Hurricane Matthew and communities with financial struggles are slow to rebuild after a major disaster.

As Florence drew near, U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted that FEMA and first responders are "supplied and ready", and he disputed the official conclusion that almost 3,000 people died in Puerto Rico, claiming the figure was a Democratic plot to make him look bad.
