Trump declares administration ‘completely ready’ for Hurricane Florence”

The outer bands of wind and rain from a weakened but still lethal Hurricane Florence began lashing North Carolina on Thursday as the monster storm moved in for a prolonged and potentially catastrophic stay along the Southeast coast that could drench the homes of as many as 10 million people.

"The latest forecast brings the center of Florence close to the southeast North Carolina coast on Friday, then Florence is expected to drift slowly southwest to west over the weekend." reads a release from the NWS.

Top winds near the center of the storm have decreased to 100 miles per hour - Category 2, but the strong winds have also spread out, which will result in the storm surge over a larger area.

SURF: Swells generated by Florence are affecting Bermuda, portions of the U.S. East Coast, and the northwestern and central Bahamas.

"For a meandering storm, the biggest concern - as we saw with Harvey - is the huge amount of rainfall", said Chris Landsea, chief of tropical analysis and forecast branch at the National Hurricane Center.

At 8 a.m., the center of Florence was 10 miles (15 kilometers) south of Wilmington.

Water kills more people in hurricanes than wind, and he said it will still be an extremely unsafe storm for rain and storm surge.

The hurricane centre's best guess was that Florence's eye would blow ashore as early as Friday afternoon (Saturday NZT) around the North Carolina-South Carolina line.

Storm surges could push as far as 2 miles (3 km) inland, NHC said, while heavy rains were forecast to extend into the Appalachian Mountains, affecting parts of Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia.

The result: catastrophic inland flooding that could swamp homes, businesses, farm fields and industrial sites.

5 a.m.: The latest update from the National Hurricane Center shows little change to Florence's path or strength.

We've pulled together some of the key elements that explain why officials are so anxious, and what damage Florence could cause.

"Get out of its way, don't play games with it", said Mr Trump. "It's a big one".

It's unclear exactly how many people fled, but more than 1.7 million people in the Carolinas and Virginia were warned to clear out. Home Depot and Lowe's activated emergency response centers to get generators, trash bags and bottled water to stores before and after the storm. The two hardware chains said they sent in a total of around 1100 trucks.

Invest 95L, which is the National Hurricane Center designation for the system we are watching in the central Gulf of Mexico, may organize into at least a tropical depression before impacting the western Gulf coast from Mexico through Texas to Louisiana by Friday.

Florence has downgraded from Category 4 to Category 2 within 24 hours, but forecasters warned that the widening storm, and its likelihood of lingering along the coast day after day after day, raises the risk of surging ocean water and torrential rain. Cameras may stop working during the storm.

Through the weekend, the massive storm - containing a zone of tropical-storm-force winds almost 400 miles wide - will drift inland, engulfing much of SC and southern North Carolina.

Florence is already making its presence felt along the coast of North Carolina.

Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Maryland have all declared a state of emergency.

"This is a handsome beach here I can't imagine how it's going to be when we come back", homeowner Sheryl Andrews said.

The European computer model has Florence veering before landfall and hovering for a couple days off the coast.

When the center of Florence gets near the coast or just across the North Carolina coastline, it will turn to the left and head toward SC.

"We lost power at home so we figured we should come to the bar", said Carla Mahaffee, a 33-year-old actor from Wilmington, as she drank a cider.

Melody Rawson evacuated her first-floor apartment in Myrtle Beach and arrived at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, Ga., to camp for free with three other adults, her disabled son, two dogs and a pet bird. You never know, but we know.
