As Hurricane Florence Makes Landfall, Trump Tweets Support to First Responders”

On Friday night, President Donald Trump tweeted out a quote from the Washington Post in a pair of tweets defending his decidedly false claim that 3000 people did not die as the result of hurricanes in Puerto Rico.

The death toll from Maria, the most powerful storm to hit there in nearly a century, was raised last month from 64, a number widely discounted as far too low, to 2,975.

Hurricane strength wind gusts have knocked down trees and power lines, leaving more than half a million people in the dark. He says, "Then, like magic, '3000 PEOPLE KILLED'".

"FIFTY TIMES LAST ORIGINAL NUMBER - NO WAY!" he tweeted late Friday.

Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló appeared to be aware of the critical distinction between Trump's tweet and the study.

After President Trump disputed the official government death toll in Puerto Rico left by Hurricane Maria, Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora called the remarks "disrespectful" and said it was frustrating that accounts of devastation on the island continue to be debated.

Trump's latest grumbling on the Maria death toll comes as Tropical Storm Florence inundates the Carolinas, killing at least four people.

Last month, Rossello accepted the study's conclusion that almost 3,000 people died as a result of the storm's effects.

Trump will travel to the region early to middle of next week and the trip will not disrupt any rescue or recovery efforts, according to Sanders.

He said: "When I left the Island, AFTER the storm had hit, they had anywhere from 6 to 18 deaths". That study - conducted by the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University - estimated 2,975 deaths. And like I said: 'Hey man, thank you for helping us.' He went down there, he did what he did. The study also examined mortality rates during the period after Hurricane Maria, and compared them to the same time period over the previous seven years.

Much of the Puerto Rico remained without power and running water for months after Maria hit, and many residents died while waiting for help.

I hate that people that make it a political issue.

Trump bristled at criticism of his administration's handling of the Puerto Rico disaster as Hurricane Florence approached the coast of North Carolina with heavy rains that forecasters warned would cause catastrophic flooding across a wide swath of the us southeast. "We have a moral obligation to do better, not only to finish the job in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, but to prevent the same type of inadequate response from ever happening again".

Trump resurfaced the debate this week when he boasted about his administration's response to the humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico, an unincorporated territory of the U.S., is home to some 3.3 million people.

Trump has been on a tear about the death toll in Puerto Rico for days.

Rossello is a leader of the island's pro-statehood New Progressive Party, which aligns with Republicans, while Cruz is from the Popular Democratic Party, whose members affiliate with the Democratic Party.
