Donald Trump Just Compared Scientific Research To 'Magic'”

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday disputed Puerto Rico's official death toll of 3,000 from hurricanes previous year and accused Democrats of inflating the figure that was reached in an independent academic study.

Public health experts have estimated that almost 3,000 perished because of the effects of Hurricane Maria.

Trump is expected to travel to the storm-ravaged region "by early to middle of next week, once it is determined his travel will not disrupt any rescue or recovery efforts", White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement Friday.

Building on comments he made earlier in the week in which he said "3,000 people did not die", the President on Saturday said the number appeared "like magic" and there was "no way" it could be accurate. "I think that Puerto Rico was an incredible, unsung success", he had said.

Even some Republicans suggested the president had gone too far. "The man has no idea, he has no solidarity, no sympathy, and no empathy for anything that does not make him look good".

Republican Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, who is also retiring, said: "There is no reason to dispute these numbers".

In a latest fit of fury, Trump successfully enraged millions of Americans by claiming the nearly 3,000 deaths in Puerto Rico after the devastation caused by two back-to-back hurricanes were fake news.

"Everything is about him and political posturing", Cruz said. The loss of any life is tragic; the extent of lives lost as a result of Maria is heart-wrenching.

"I don't see any scenario where those tweets are helpful to anyone on the Republican ticket", said David Johnson, a longtime GOP consultant and former executive director of the state Republican Party.

Below is a list of studies that have estimated the death toll there.

As the nation prepares for another potentially devastating storm with Hurricane Florence barreling towards the east coast, Puerto Rico has still not recovered from 2017's Hurricane Maria.

Numerous deaths in the aftermath of Maria were attributed to power failures and limited access to healthcare and clean drinking water.

Trump has focused his ire on San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz, who positioned herself as a critic of his administration in the immediate aftermath of the storms.

The deaths fell in two categories: direct and indirect. Kidney patients got abbreviated treatments from dialysis centers that lacked generator fuel and fresh water, despite pleas for federal and local officials to treat them as a higher priority, according to patient advocates. When he visited Puerto Rico a few days after the storm, Trump declared that, because of the low initial death toll - which included only deaths caused directly by the storm - Maria wasn't a "real catastrophe" like Hurricane Katrina, which killed 1,833 people.

Echoing Cruz's condemnation of Trump's tweets, Democratic lawmakers also expressed outrage that the president would attempt to downplay the number of people who died as a result of a natural disaster and US government neglect.

In a report published two weeks ago, researchers at George Washington University (GWU) in Washington, D.C., concluded that 2,975 "excess deaths" were linked to that hurricane.

"We are scientists. We are public health people".
