FEMA Chief Brock Long Facing Scrutiny Over Car Use

FEMA Chief Brock Long Facing Scrutiny Over Car Use”

According to Politico, Long's taxpayer-funded travel has become the subject of an investigation by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) inspector general, who took notice after a government vehicle was involved in an accident while in Long's use.

A senior administration official confirmed to CNN on Thursday that the inspector general's investigation includes, but may not be limited to, travel using government resources, and that would include Long's travel in government vehicles on the taxpayers' dime.

Long is the latest Trump appointee to face scrutiny over his use of government resources.

"Administrator Long and the FEMA workforce are focused on preparing for, responding to, and recovering from Hurricane Florence and other active tropical systems", Nalepa tweeted in response to the POLITICO report.

"I would never intentionally run a program incorrectly", he said. Bottom line is if we made mistakes on the way a program was run then we'll work with the OIG to get those corrected. "Doing something unethical is not part of my DNA and it is not part of my track record in my whole entire career".

Over 1 million residents of coastal states including North Carolina and SC were ordered to evacuate as of Thursday afternoon, ahead of the expected landfall of Hurricane Florence on Friday.

Politico said FEMA directed questions about the probe to the IG's office, which did not respond to the news organization's request for comment.

Both FEMA and ICE are agencies managed by DHS. "FEMA fully cooperates with all investigations conducted by the DHS OIG".

Jeff Byard, the Federal Emergency Management Agency's associate administrator for response and recovery, said the important issue was that the hurricane would be a "Mike Tyson punch to the Carolina coast" and people had to heed evacuation orders.

Long reportedly began having a government driver take him home since he took control of FEMA past year.

Chris Kleponis/SIPA/NewscomJust a day after it was reported that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) managed to misplace almost a million bottles of water that were supposed to be delivered to the Puerto Rican victims of Hurricane Maria, the agency was thrown into another controversy based on Administrator Brock Long's travel habits.
