Social media reveals damage from Florence’s record-breaking rainfall

NEW BERN OVERWHELMEDIn New Bern, North Carolina, the storm surge "overwhelmed" the town, located at the confluence of the Neuse and Trent rivers, Cooper said.

Authorities ordered the immediate evacuation of up to 7,500 people living within a mile of a stretch of the Cape Fear River and the Little River, about 100 miles from the coast.

Numerous state highways leading out of town were also disappearing under water.

Other areas throughout the region reported flooded and impassable roads, downed trees and power lines and power outages of more than 125,000 customers. "Dangerous storm surge could also affect portions of the northeast coast of SC coast today".

Across the two states there are some 30,000 people staying in emergency shelters.

Bergaw Mayor Pete Cowan warned that the local hospital was not accessible; it had already been evacuated. We want to keep our journalism open and accessible and be able to keep providing you with news and analyses from the frontlines of Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish World.

The South Carolina Emergency Management Division called the insurance rumor "FALSE" over social media, saying that the claim had spread to SC residents.

The Washington Post reports that, according to preliminary reports submitted to the National Weather Service, Florence's 30 inches of rainfall in North Carolina has broken the statewide rainfall record set by Hurricane Floyd in 1999 of 24.06 inches.

The center said the storm would dump as much as 40 inches (102 cm) of rain along coastal areas of the Carolinas, as well as up to 10 inches in southwestern Virginia.

The National Hurricane Center said Florence broke a North Carolina rainfall record that had stood for nearly 20 years: Preliminary reports showed Swansboro got more than 30 inches (75 centimeters) and counting, obliterating the mark set in 1999, when Hurricane Floyd dropped just over 24 inches (60 centimeters) on the state. These areas will see 3 to 6 inches of rainfall, with isolated cases of 8 inches. He warned that rivers continue to rise after the heaviest rains have fallen.

With flood waters rising rapidly in many communities, stranded people were being rescued by boat and by helicopter, while tens of thousands of others hunkered down in shelters.

The storm is moving at just 3 miles per hour (5 kph), according to the National Hurricane Center.

"WE ARE COMING TO GET YOU", the tweet said. "But we're still in the throes of it".

"I can not overstate it: Floodwaters are rising, and if you aren't watching for them you are risking your life", Gov. Roy Cooper said.

The weather service later measured a storm surge 10 feet deep in the city, which lies on the Neuse River near the Atlantic coast. Eventually, a volunteer rescue team from IN arrived with a boat and rescued them.

It was downgraded to Category 1 before coming ashore on Friday near Wilmington. "If the river rises to the level they say it's going to, then this warehouse is going to be under water". "But right now we'll wait and see if the water gets up to that point".

Under a vehicle port on Route 117 South in Burgaw, Kevin Everett's family cooked pancakes and bacon on a charcoal grill.

After they brought the dogs to dry land, they went back to try to rescue a cat Drake had noticed at another home, he told "CBS This Morning.". The Army Corps of Engineers was preparing to start work restoring power, installing temporary roofing and removing debris.

But for now, "we're going to try to ride it out as long as we can", he said.

In other parts of the state, those who made a decision to stay behind and ride out the storm needed rescuing as the storm stalled.

Early Saturday, approximately 20 people were rescued near Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, in Jacksonville, North Carolina, by military officials and delivered to the Piney Green Volunteer Fire Department before being transferred to Onslow County shelters.
