United States says Russian Federation hid North Korea sanctions breaches, slaps new sanctions

United States says Russian Federation hid North Korea sanctions breaches, slaps new sanctions”

The US announced new sanctions against North Korea on Thursday, taking aim at a Chinese company, its North Korean CEO and its Russia-based sister company.

The Treasury also said the China-based company was linked to the North Korean government's defense research and ballistic missile programs.

Earlier on Wednesday, Trump signed an executive order to help protect U.S. elections from foreign interference by imposing sanctions on countries and other actors who seek to meddle, United States officials said.

Russian Federation and China have suggested the Security Council discuss easing sanctions after US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met in June and Kim pledged to work toward denuclearization.

This followed news that the U.S. sanctioned a Chinese technology firm and its Russian sister company following allegations both were being operated by North Korea and therefore providing revenue to Pyongyang.

Thursday, September 13, the U.S. imposed new sanctions against the DPRK, under the restrictions were Russian and Chinese firms of cooperating with the North Korean regime.

The Trump administration has sought to ramp up pressure on Kim to strike a deal to halt North Korea's nuclear program in part by penalizing Chinese and Russian firms that the increasingly isolated country depends on to keep its economy afloat.

Haley said Russian interference "sets an unacceptable precedent that damages the sanctity of the United Nations independent panel reporting process".

By blocking since early August release of the original document, Russia explained that the report relied mainly on American information and did not take into account a Russian analysis of the application of sanctions.

Diplomats said Russian Federation pressured the independent sanctions monitors to amend the report. "The full implementation of U.N. Security Council resolutions remains mandatory for all member states - including Russian Federation".

White House officials have acknowledged that there has been no progress on denuclearization, even as President Donald Trump considers a second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

The Security Council is scheduled to meet on September 17 to discuss implementation of sanctions on North Korea at Washington's the request.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, one diplomat said the amended report removed some references to Russians accused of breaching North Korea sanctions.
