There Are 16 Nuclear Reactors at Risk From Hurricane Florence”

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Sept 12, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) said "Duke Energy's Brunswick nuclear plant south of Wilmington, N.C., could face hurricane-force winds, major storm surges and heavy rain".

There are 16 reactors in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, the states that likely will sustain the most damage from the storm, but most are located well inland and not expected to experience hurricane force winds.

The release says that there are multiple levels of protection in place to protect the plant, but that shutting it down helps mitigate effects beyond what the region is used to. "Two, they have backup generators for power and we will rapidly assess any impacts to a nuclear power plant post-storm", Byard said in a call with media.

Nuclear plants have procedures that require they shut a safe amount of time before hurricane force winds of at least 74 miles per hour are expected to reach the site.

Brunswick Nuclear Plant, four miles inland in Southport, N.C., is now in the path of Hurricane Florence.

"These facilities have proven their ability to withstand hurricanes and provide electricity to homes and businesses as soon as off-site power is restored and the electricity grid can accommodate the power", he added.

Duke Energy (NYSE:DUK) has started to shut its Brunswick nuclear power plant in North Carolina ahead of Hurricane Florence, which is expected to strike the coast near the plant on Friday.

Brunswick plant onsite NRC Inspector Galen Smith, had no worries that the Brunswick plant would survive the storm easily.

About 485,143 people were without power in North Carolina as Florence made its way inward, according to the North Carolina Department of Safety. Restoring power to all customers could take weeks, it said.

The Brunswick plant's two reactors are of the same design as those in Fukushima, Japan, that exploded and leaked radiation following a 2011 magnitude 9 natural disaster and tsunami. The Robinson plant responded to a temporary loss of off-site power by shutting down safely.

Duke Energy Corp spokeswoman Mary Kathryn Green told Reuters that since the accident at the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan in 2011, all USA nuclear plants have installed more safety equipment, including portable pumps and generators. In October 2016, Hurricane Matthew's landfall brought down power lines and flooded transformers, leaving more than two million customers without power across several states.
