Typhoon Mangkhut: Deadly typhoon takes aim at south China”

Typhoon Mangkhut whipped up storm surges as high as three metres in Hong Kong last night and forced the nearby gambling hub of Macau to close its casinos for the first time in its history.

Hong Kong residents huddled indoors Sunday and strong winds sent debris flying as Typhoon Mangkhut, the world's strongest storm this year, carved a destructive and deadly path from the Philippines toward mainland China.

More than 2.4 million people were evacuated from China's southern Guangdong province ahead of the massive typhoon, the strongest to hit the region in almost two decades.

The plans of tens of thousands of travellers were disrupted by flight cancellations at Hong Kong's worldwide airport, a major regional hub.

"Southern regions including the provinces of Guangdong, Fujian and Hainan will be hit by gales and storms on Sunday and Monday", the National Meteorological Center told China's official Xinhua news agency. Bus, ferry and rail services were suspended and nearly 900 flights were cancelled at the city's airport, one of the world's busiest. Flights in Guangzhou and Shenzhen were also cancelled, and regional high-speed train services were suspended, according to AP.

Most of the deaths in the Philippines were caused by landslides in the Cordillera and Nueva Vizcaya regions, officials say.

"Because Mangkhut will bring winds and rains of extraordinary speeds, scope and severity, our preparation and response efforts will be greater than in the past", Lee said.

More than half a million people in the Southeast Asian country were affected by the storm, according to the government.

Mangkhut struck the northern Philippines as a super typhoon, causing flooding and landslides on the northern island of Luzon.

"The wind is so strong".

At the moment, Mangkhut is positioned 62 miles west of Hong Kong, but high winds are still able to make a full impact.

The Shenzhen airport, shut since midnight, will be closed until 8:00 a.m. (2400 GMT) on Monday.

The government and casinos took extra measures ahead of the storm, determined to avoid a repeat of Typhoon Hato which battered Macau a year ago, killing 12 people and drawing accusations the city was ill-prepared.

"I think most guests are understandably concerned about the strength of the storm, but I speak for myself and my family in that we believe we are safe here", said the Guangzhou-based journalist, adding that hotel staff have been very helpful.

Water levels surged 3.5 meters (12 feet) in some places, waves swamped roads and washed up live fish, washing into some residential blocks and a mall in an eastern district. Authorities and residents say they had learned from that experience, and that residents were quicker and more willing to evacuate to shelters.

The hardest-hit province was Benguet, where 38 people died, mostly in two landslides, and 37 remain missing.

Lorenzana said they'd fly north carrying aid and allowing rescuers to reach remote areas of the mountainous north as soon as the weather improved. Forty-five other people were missing and 33 were injured in the storm.

President Rodrigo Duterte inspected damage from the typhoon in a fly-by over Cagayan province, 382km north of Manila, where Mangkhut made landfall over Baggao town early Saturday.

About 87,000 people had evacuated from high-risk areas of the Philippines.

Typhoon Ompong left 25 people dead, Presidential Adviser on Political Affairs Francis Tolentino told CNN Philippines on Sunday.
