Soon-Yi Previn breaks silence to defend Woody Allen

Soon-Yi Previn breaks silence to defend Woody Allen”

When it comes to freakish family dynamics that have rocked Hollywood, the situation between Mia Farrow, her adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn, and Woody Allen has caused controversy for years.

Unsurprisingly, Soon-Yi's claims were met with a swift rebuttal from both Dylan and Ronan Farrow.

Woody and Soon-Yi have been married since 1997 after Woody and Mia's relationship broke down in acrimonious circumstances in January 1992, when she discovered some of the nude photos he'd taken of Soon-Yi. When the couple divorced in 1979, Farrow retained custody of Soon-Yi as well as several more of the couple's adopted children (twins Matthew and Sascha remained with their father).

In the New York Magazine piece, Soon-Yi Previn said Mia Farrow abused her, and said she had no positive memories of her childhood with Mia Farrow. Mia began dating Allen in the early 90's, but Allen began a romantic relationship with Mia's child Previn soon after.

In August 1992, Dylan and her mother accused Allen of sexually assaulting the then-seven-year-old. Allen was investigated but wasn't charged, and he has long denied inappropriately touching Farrow. Accusations and criticisms were continually levied by the Farrows, including Mia, Dylan, and Allen's journalist son Ronan (who was at the forefront of the #MeToo movement as one of the leaders of the various investigative reports about Harvey Weinstein).

Previn said her adoptive mother, Mia Farrow, is behind the molestation claims.

In the article, Previn said her mother would try to teach her the alphabet with wooden blocks - but would throw them at her if she made a mistake.

From the beginning, Previn and her mother were "like oil and water", she said. I spent most of my time in the backyard, I don't know why. "She would also tip me upside down, holding me by my feet, to get the blood to drain to my head".

It should be noted that Dylan Farrow's first significant public comments as an adult came in a 2014 article written by Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times, a friend of Mia Farrow's. "I am a pariah", he said in the interview.

New York Magazine spokesperson Lauren Starke defended the story, telling The Hollywood Reporter: "This is a story about Soon-Yi Previn, and puts forward her perspective on what happened in her family".

She said Mia "never coached" her, "even when Woody Allen unleashed hell on her via lawyers and publicists and allies like the author of this piece". "But what's happened to Woody is so upsetting, so unjust". He was my mother's boyfriend, plain and simple. I felt he was not very observant, not worth getting to know.

The piece also quotes Allen on the subject. "People think that I was Soon-Yi's father, that I raped and married my underaged, retarded daughter".

'He pursued me. That's why the relationship has worked: He's usually a meek person, and he took a big leap'. The undeniable truth is that these children suffered, and that is criminal.

"Thanks to my mother, I grew up in a wonderful home, filled with love, that she created", Dylan shared in a statement on Twitter.

"As a journalist, I'm shocked by the refusal to include eyewitness testimony that would contradict falsehoods in this piece, and the failure to print my sister's response".

Ronan Farrow described the story as "a hit job," writing that "survivors of abuse deserve better".

But Farrow's other children, who have long supporting Dylan's claim, rallied together against the interview. "Mia wasn't maternal to me from the get-go", Previn told interviewer Daphne Merkin, who notes in the story that she's a close friend of Allen's.
