Trump Orders Declassification of Carter Page FBI Documents

Trump Orders Declassification of Carter Page FBI Documents”

It's not yet clear when and how the declassified documents and texts will be released.

But the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee criticized Trump's move. Trump has made wild accusations against both men, claiming they were part of a politically motivated plot against him.

WASHINGTON-President Trump on Monday ordered the immediate declassification of a number of sensitive intelligence-community and law-enforcement documents related to the continuing investigation into interference by Russian Federation in US elections. The June 2017 application was the last of four filed by the Justice Department in support of FISA court orders allowing the monitoring of Page for almost a year.

The Carter Page warrant was released in heavily redacted form in July, amid controversy over the Federal Bureau of Investigation allegedly using the Democratic National Committee- and Hillary Clinton-funded Steele dossier as grounds for the renewal without informing the FISA court of the Democratic connection.

The pages that Trump ordered declassified concern Page's links to the Russian government and alleged ties to Russia's intelligence services, including his 2004-2007 residency in Russia, where he began business dealings with state-owned Gazprom.

All are in an effort to help House Republicans defend President Trump, and help them work to discredit the Mueller investigation.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes is reportedly pleased with the order, which covers "pretty much everything" he wanted, and said he considered the text messages a "bonus".

"I commend President Trump for his decision to declassify numerous documents, including several redacted pages of the Carter Page FISA application and important messages relating to the Russian Federation investigation", Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., said in a statement.

The move comes after a small group of Republicans in Congress, all staunch allies of Trump, held a news conference last week asking him to declassify the documents.

Schiff believes Trump spoke with his "TV attorney" Rudy Guiliani and his allies in Congress to determine what should be released. To be immediately followed by the White House following its own release.

Democrats and former national security officials have said Trump's directive is a risky one - threatening to undermine an investigation of his own campaign and potentially revealing confidential law enforcement sources. More texts from them, as well as Ohr and Comey, will be released unredacted.

Meanwhile, Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff, the ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee, called Trump's move a "clear abuse of power" meant to intervene in the Russian Federation investigation by "ordering the selective release of materials he believes are helpful to his defence team and thinks will advance a false narrative".
