GOP torn on how to handle Kavanaugh assault allegations”

Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) listens during a markup hearing September 13 before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Feinstein has demanded that the confirmation vote be postponed until the FBI investigates claims of sexual assault against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Her husband, Russell Ford, told the newspaper that when she described the incident in the 2012 session, she used Kavanaugh's last name and said she was concerned he might eventually be nominated to the Supreme Court.

Mr. Manley recalls his time as a young staffer in the Senate when Anita Hill accused then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment in 1991.

But Ford's lawyers say in a letter to Committee Chairman, Republican Chuck Grassley, that some of the senators on the committee "appear to have made up their minds" and believe Kavanaugh.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday stepped up his defense of his U.S. Supreme Court pick, saying it is hard to imagine Brett Kavanaugh committed a sexual assault and that it would be unfortunate if the nominee's accuser does not testify before the Senate.

Politico reported on Tuesday that Bush said he and his wife, Laura, "have known and respected Brett Kavanaugh for decades".

Tuesday night, Blasey Ford's attorneys sent the Senate Judiciary Committee a letter asking for a FBI investigation into her allegations before she testified in front of the committee. He said senators hearing Ford's accusations, if she testifies, "will open it up and they will do a very good job" considering Ford's allegations and Kavanaugh's denial. She said she managed to escape once Kavanaugh's friend, identified as Mark Judge, jumped on top of them. "I would want to see what she has to say", he said.

However, the Republicans were careful not to sound insensitive in the case as they openly supported the upcoming Monday's hearing against the Senate Judiciary Committee. John Kennedy (R-LA) emphasized that she, through her lawyer, had asked for a public hearing earlier this week.

With the risk that further delay could imperil the Kavanaugh nomination, GOP senators fought to make Monday the drop-dead deadline for addressing the Blasey Ford accusation, insisting that it's time to move on with or without her testimony.

The problem for Republicans is that this allegation comes at the worst possible time for them, politically. Republicans hope to have Kavanaugh confirmed by October 1, the start of the next Supreme Court term.

When President Trump calls her Pocahontas, you bet a fundraising email goes out - incredibly, she feels no shame in going back to the struggles of real Native Americans if it means a healthy cash grab for herself. Dianne Feinstein of California, had a letter from Ford outlining the alleged attack.

"If we don't hear from both sides on Monday, let's vote".

We would welcome the opportunity to talk with you and Ranking Member Feinstein to discuss reasonable steps as to how Dr. Ford can cooperate while also taking care of her own health and security.

From across the room a very drunken REDACTED said mixed words to Kavanaugh ranging from "go for it" to "stop".

If imploring her doesn't get her to commit, he may have to play hardball by beseeching her.

However, as Kavanaugh-who already was deeply unpopular before Ford's allegations were made public-hasn't given any indication that he will stop seeking a lifetime appointment to the nation's highest court, other advocacy groups and Democratic lawmakers are calling for a delay of any confirmation vote until the Federal Bureau of Investigation can fully investigate Ford's claims.
