Household cleaners may alter kids' gut flora, contribute to being overweight

Household cleaners may alter kids' gut flora, contribute to being overweight”

Associations with altered gut flora in babies 3-4 months old were strongest for frequent use of household disinfectants such as multisurface cleaners, which showed lower levels of Haemophilus and Clostridium bacteria, but higher levels of Lachnospiraceae.

Scientists examined the data from the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) birth cohort on microbes in infant fecal matter. When those children with higher levels of Lachnospiraceae were 3 years old, their body mass index (BMI) was higher than children who do not live in homes that frequently use disinfectants, the study also showed.

Researchers collected fecal samples from 757 babies, aged 3-4 months, and asked mothers about their household cleaner use.

While the researchers found an increase in Lachnospiraceae bacteria with more frequent cleaning with disinfectants, they did not see the same association with washing detergents without the bacteria-killing ingredients found in disinfectants or eco-friendly cleaners.

Researchers could not recommend that parents switch to ecologically friendly cleaning products because the causal link has not been found as of yet. Studies of piglets have found similar changes in the gut microbiome when exposed to aerosol disinfectants.

Infants were more likely to have normal weight when eco-friendly cleaners were used daily.

"We figured out that infants living in households with disinfectants being dilapidated a minimum of weekly were twice as likely to occupy increased ranges of the intestine microbes Lachnospiraceae at age Three-four months", feedback Anita Kozyrskyj, Ph.D., a College of Alberta pediatrics professor, and fundamental investigator on the SyMBIOTA challenge, an investigation into how adjustment of the baby intestine microbiome impacts on kid's health.

"We did not find a relationship between detergents, gut microbiome change or obesity risk independent of whether disinfectants were used", added the pediatrics professor.

Based on the study, the researchers argue eliminating disinfectant agents in your home can help protect your infant's gut microbiome and reduce the risk of weight gain and obesity. This behavior could promote a healthy gut microbiomes and weight in their babies.

The study also looked out households that use ecologically friendly disinfectant and found that children who grew up in these homes have a decreased risk of growing up overweight or obese.

The research involved children and study of three types of cleaning products, detergents, disinfectants, and eco-products. Dr. Kozyrskyj suggests these mothers may have generally healthier lifestyles, and eat more healthily during pregnancy, for example, so their children inherit a healthier microbiome.

"Our "mediation" statistical analysis suggests that a gut microbiome enriched with Lachnospiraceae early in infancy was likely directly responsible for children becoming overweight or obese". "I want to emphasise that our findings on the disinfectant exhaust were at the increased conclude of exhaust".

"Further study is required on the mechanisms through which household cleaning products alter gut microbial composition and the subsequent role this might have on metabolic disease", the authors continue. She also stated that not using disinfectants at home might put a child at risk of spreading infection.

The CHILD Study is collecting a range of health, lifestyle and environmental exposure information from almost 3,500 mothers and children from pregnancy to age five; it spans four provinces (BC, AB, MB and ON).
