2 dead after van is swept away in S. Carolina

2 dead after van is swept away in S. Carolina”

Horry County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Brooke Holden says a sheriff's office van was carrying two patients and two deputies from Conway to Darlington on Tuesday night when it was overtaken by flood waters.

Asked how the women were restrained in the back of the van, Fox told CNN they were "seat belted". Hurricane Florence's torrential rains have flooded much of the area and washed over sections of numerous roads, including the interstate.

"Tonight's incident is a tragedy", said Horry County Sheriff Phillip Thompson. Officials said the van was near the Little Pee Dee River, one of the bodies of water state officials are watching closely following the heavy rains of Florence.

Justin Bamberg, a state lawmaker and lawyer who has represented the families of several people injured or killed by law enforcement officers, said Wednesday he's perplexed by the decision to transport anyone in such uncertain weather conditions.

Two women in the back of a sheriff's van drowned Tuesday evening when deputies tried to drive down a SC road flooded by tropical storm Florence.

The SCDOT added the driver of the vehicle had to go around a barrier to get stuck where they were.

The incident brings Florence's death toll to 37.

Cooper warned locals that the flooding isn't over yet.

President Donald Trump, meanwhile, arrived in storm-ravaged North Carolina on Wednesday and helped volunteers at a church in the hard-hit coastal town of New Bern.

Authorities confirm two detainees drowned when a van was swept away in rising flood waters in SC.

"I know for many people this feels like a nightmare that just won't end", he said.

Marion county coroner Jerry Richardson confirmed the two women - 45-year-old Wendy H. Newton and 43-year-old Nicolette T. Green - died at the scene.

The two deputies attempted to extricate the persons being transported. "Despite persistent and ongoing efforts, floodwater rose rapidly and the deputies were unable to open the doors", the statement reads. The two deputies were rescued, the occupants have not been recovered.

According to reporter Meg Kinnard of the Associated Press, as of Wednesday morning both bodies remained inside the submerged truck - with flood waters around the vehicle rising by more than two feet since the incident took place. This incident is being investigated by the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED).
