Time running out for Kavanaugh accuser to talk, say Republicans”

Kavanaugh has denied stories of a sexual assault as alleged by California college professor Christine Blasey Ford.

Christine Blasey Ford wants the FBI to investigate her allegation that she was sexually assaulted by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh before she testifies at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing next week, her lawyers said in a letter to the panel. She also identified another student and friend of Kavanaugh's, Mark Judge, as being in the room.

Leaving the White House to survey flood damage in North Carolina from Hurricane Florence, Trump conceded that "we'll have to make a decision" if Ford's account proves convincing.

"What we're saying is there should be an investigation because that's the right thing to do", Banks said.

With Trump's effort to cement conservative control of the nation's highest court on a knife's edge, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley set a Friday morning deadline for Christine Blasey Ford to decide if she will talk to lawmakers. In an interview with The Associated Press, he said the allegation against Kavanaugh, if true, is "close to being disqualifying, if not disqualifying".

Donald Trump and Senate Republicans have been emphatic that an FBI renewal of its background checks on Mr Kavanaugh will not happen, saying an investigation by committee staff - which Democrats are boycotting - is sufficient.

As a victim of childhood sexual assault himself, Blow urged the Senate Judiciary Committee and the general public to understand why Blasey didn't tell her story for so long.

I confess that, in real time, I was unhappy with Sen.

Trump said he would really want to see Ford what she has to say. "If she shows up that would be wonderful".

Banks reiterated that Ford has had to leave her home because of threats to her family's safety and said, "Fairness and respect for her situation dictate that she should have time to deal with this".

While most Republicans have expressed support for Kavanaugh, they've largely been careful to not criticize Ford's assertions about what she says happened.

A new poll shows 36% of Americans are now opposed to Kavanaugh's nomination for the US Supreme Court, up 6% from a similar poll in August.

Those demands are "not about finding the truth, but delaying the process until after the midterm elections", Senator Graham, a Judiciary panel member, said in a statement.

Ford's lawyers have asked the FBI to investigate her charge - that a drunken Kavanaugh groped her and tried to remove her clothes at a party when they were both teenagers - before she agrees to appear at the hearing, but Republicans have refused to go along.

The Iowa Republican's comments contrast with other Republicans who have said Ford is "mistaken" or have implied that she is making up the allegation out of political motivation.

But the hearing couldn't be held today, not if the Committee was going to vote favorably on the nomination.

Another small detail contradicting Miranda's claim that "many of us heard about it in school" is that Ford claims the attack happened during the summer, presumably when school was out.

She went on to describe living in a privileged, hard-drinking culture at the time where she once had to call the cops on her own party, and she called on Kavanaugh's female supporters to question his integrity.

They announced their plan to protest at Arizona Republican Sen.

Document declassification: Trump declassified text messages from now former FBI Director James Comey and other Justice Department officials, because sycophantic Fox News personalities like Sean Hannity, Lou Dobbs and Janine Pirro wanted him to.

If Ford does not testify, the Republicans will go ahead with Kavanaugh's confirmation process.

The 24 classmates who attended Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, Md., declared Ford is a woman of "honesty, integrity, and intelligence", according to CNN, which reported it had obtained a copy of the missive.

Democrats are casting Republicans as strong-arming a wronged woman, their eyes on a #MeToo movement that has caught fire and exploded the careers of dozens of male titans.

None of this is to suggest that Ford's accusations deserve no further corroboration, I note at The Week.

However, Senator Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Republican-dominated judiciary committee, said Tuesday that Ford's presence was not confirmed.

She said Kavanaugh, "stumbling drunk", threw her down on a bed, grinding his body against hers and trying to pull off her one-piece bathing suit and the clothing she was wearing over it. Ford said when she tried to scream, he put his hand over her mouth. "The invitation for Monday (Sept. 24) still stands". But in the days since she publicly accused Kavanaugh of the assault when they were teens at a party 35 years ago, the lawyers said, she has been the target of "vicious harassment and even death threats".
