Trump laments Sessions recusal: "I don't have an attorney general"

Trump laments Sessions recusal:

Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Wednesday blamed the Obama administration for crime increases in Chicago in other large cities, saying the deals the Justice Department cut ended up tying the hands of police officers.

US President Donald Trump has renewed his criticism of Attorney General of the US, Jeff Sessions.

Mr Trump also told Hill.TV that he was "not happy" with Mr Sessions on immigration and other issues, and said the attorney general had performed "very poorly" during the nomination process for the post.

Responding to whether he might fire his attorney general, Trump said, "We'll see what happens". "I mean, he was mixed up and confused, and people that worked with him for, you know, a long time in the Senate were not nice to him, but he was giving very confusing answers. And I guess I study history, and I say I just want to leave things alone, but it was very unfair" of Sessions to recuse himself.

Trump did not offer a firm answer when asked about Sessions's future by Hill.TV.

The president has long questioned Sessions" decision to recuse himself from the Russian Federation investigation now being run by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, and has referred to the probe as a "witch hunt" and mocked "the Jeff Sessions "Justice' Department" on Twitter.

In an early 2017 email to a Session's aide, the Federal Bureau of Investigation concluded that he did not need to reveal contacts with foreign government officials that were made during his work as a senator. In addition, rapes more than tripled and vehicle theft and aggravated assault went up by a third, according to the attorney general.

"He gets in and probably because of the experience that he had going through the nominating when somebody asked him the first question about Hillary Clinton or something he said, 'I recuse myself, I recuse myself,"' Trump said.

In his most recent decision, Sessions said judges can only terminate or dismiss cases in "specific and circumscribed" circumstances.

"While I am attorney general, the actions of the Department of Justice will not be improperly influenced by political considerations", he said in August. Courts later checked Sessions and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, ordering injunctions against such enforcement, but the issue was hardly a reluctance on Sessions' part. But it's not because he's "weak", as Trump tweeted last July. He's also an immigration hardliner and an opponent of cannabis research.
