'Divisive, Dangerous': TX Sheriff Slams Beto O'Rourke for Comments on Police”

Each candidate displayed the sort of strengths that have earned them the praise or enmity of the opposing camp.

O'Rourke has become a national figure over the past few months for running a shockingly successful campaign against sitting senator Ted Cruz. Early on, for instance, the candidates squared off on gun control legislation and the 2nd Amendment.

He said there has been a war on a police officers for several years, and it's troubling to see a lawmaker as prominent as O'Rourke seemingly side against law enforcement. Cruz responded that "Texans' lives are better" because the Republicans won the presidency in 2016, and he didn't want to be a sore loser. Cruz's seat was supposed to be safe, but he conceded at Friday's debate that he's in a battle.

"You're just going to mean that more killers and murderers have guns, '" Cruz said.

"I believe everyone's rights should be protected, regardless of your race, regardless of your ethnicity", Cruz said.

Representative Beto O'Rourke speaks during a campaign rally in Plano, Texas, Sept. 15, 2018. He also said that O'Rourke was more to the left on policy than Sen. "I'm sorry you don't like thoughts and prayers".

"Ms. Ford's allegations must be investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, full stop", Mr. O'Rourke began his comments.

But O'Rourke's comments appear to contradict the police reports published by the Houston Chronicle last month that claimed O'Rourke "attempted to leave the scene" after he lost control of his auto and hit another vehicle in 1998.

On the Supreme Court and economics, the specter of President Trump loomed large.

Cruz finished second in the 2016 Republican presidential primary.

When asked why fans had this image that he didn't support Democrats.

That election was "one like no other", Mr. Cruz said with a smile, before saying after it he "faced a choice". Instead, Cruz said he "loved his wife very much" - a callback to when Trump insulted Cruz's wife, Heidi, on Twitter.

O'Rourke denied that and offered another confrontational retort as Cruz challenged him to name a judge he has supported who would defend the Second Amendment.

"I could have chosen to make it about myself, to be selfish and say, you know what, my feelings are hurt, so I'm going to take my marbles and go home", he said.

"I'll tell you, it's a troubling pattern", Cruz said.

"If he's talking about NFL players kneeling during the national anthem at a football game to call attention to injustice in this country, he'll talk about flag burning", O'Rourke said.

The spat Cruz had with Trump in the 2016 primary, and the way Cruz capitulated nearly immediately after, was not just a matter of whether Cruz had the principles to stand up for himself or his family. It is not clear precisely what part of O'Rourke's argument he disagrees with - that it's wrong for police to murder an innocent person in their home?
