Israeli report exposes how Syrian fire took down Russian plane”

Israel has not altered its coordination with Russian Federation on attacks it carries out in Syria, said the Israeli official.

In the report, Israel noted that Syria has become much more aggressive with its response to Israeli airstrikes, with the May 10 "Operation House of Cards" against more than 50 Iranian targets across Syria being met with approximately 170 Syrian anti-aircraft missiles.

An Israeli military delegation travelled to Moscow on Thursday to express sorrow over the deaths and to share information on the incident with their Russian counterparts.

The Russian plane with 15 servicemen on board disappeared from radars on Monday as four Israeli F-16 warplanes were attacking state institutions in Syria's Latakia Province, which is home to Russia-run Hmeimim airbase.

Initially the incident appeared likely to cause friction between Israel and Russian Federation, with the Defence Ministry in Moscow accusing Israel of indirectly causing it.

But Russian President Vladimir Putin later adopted a more conciliatory tone, saying the incident was the result of "tragic accidental circumstances".

The Israeli military said in a statement that they presented the situation report regarding the plane's downing, as well as the pre-mission information and the findings of an Israeli military inquiry.

"We proved how the Syrian reckless anti-air fire was the direct cause of hitting the Russian aircraft", he said. "We provided the Russians with our data, they had some questions that we responded to, and we also stressed that it was not a provocation on Israel's part", the official added.

"The meetings were held in good spirits and the representatives shared a professional, open and transparent discussion on various issues", the Israeli military said.

Russia's Defence Ministry was initially critical of Israel, saying it had only given Moscow one minute's warning before its jets attacked, putting the Russian aircraft in danger of being caught in cross-fire.

Any dispute between Israel and Russian Federation could lessen Israel's ability to carry out air strikes inside Syria against what it regards as the greatest threat to Israel's security from the country's civil war - build-ups of Iranian forces or those of Iran's Shi'ite ally, Hezbollah.

Lebanese news outlet Al-Mayadeen meanwhile reported that Russian Federation plans to continue its closure of the airspace above Syria's territorial waters after the end of military exercises on September 26.

He also complained that Israel gave less than a minute's notice of the raid through the two countries' de-confliction hotline and described the targets only as "industrial facilities in northern Syria".

He said the two sides had committed to the "very effective" mechanism but stressed that Israel's "freedom of movement is paramount". "The IDF (Israeli Defence Forces) will continue to implement our strategic interests", the official said.
