One Palestinian Killed, 40 Injured during Gaza Protests”

The Return Protests are held by the Palestinians every Friday as a large number of young men head into the border area to protest against the Zionist measures and to highlight the Palestinian national rights.

An Israeli combat soldier was lightly injured earlier Friday by shrapnel, the IDF said, adding that it responded with several airstrikes in the northern Gaza Strip. Special units also shot flaming balloons against Israel.

Local media reported that prominent Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar arrived in the Al Awda refugee camp east of Gaza City, where he encouraged demonstrations to continue until Gazans reach their goals for the "March of Return" campaign - to lift the siege on the Palestinian enclave, he said.

The demonstrators are demanding an end to the Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip, which has been going on for nearly 12 years, and to the right of return for refugees.

The ministry said in a statement that at least 312 Palestinians sustained different wounds, 30 of which were transferred to hospitals for treatment including 21 injuries with live fire. Two of the wounded were said to be in serious condition.

'The rioters are hurling grenades and explosive devices, burning tires and hurling rocks at (Israeli) troops and the security fence, ' it said.

Tensions have been running high near the fence since March 30, which marked the start of a series of protests dubbed "The Great March of Return".

Hamas, the Islamic militant group that rules Gaza, is stepping up protests at its border with Israel to signal frustration with stalled talks with its neighbor, prompting new deadly clashes with Israeli forces.
