Tropical Storm Kirk intensifies as it nears Barbados

Tropical Storm Kirk intensifies as it nears Barbados”

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles (185 km) from the center. That high will help steer the storm west across the Lesser Antilles and into the Caribbean Sea.

"Sustained surface winds of between 25 to 35 miles per hour (40 to 55 km/h) with gusts to storm force are expected to spread across Barbados starting tonight and persisting into tomorrow".

The government of France has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for Guadeloupe and Martinique.

The most serious threat from Kirk is expected to be from rainfall.

According to the 5:00 a.m. advisory, the center of Tropical Storm Kirk was located near latitude 11.8 North, longitude 52.7 West. Kirk is moving toward the west near 18 miles per hour (30 km/h). "On the forecast track, the center will move over the Lesser Antilles within the Tropical Storm Warning area Thursday night", said the NHC at 11 a.m. on September 26.

Watchers of the Atlantic tropics might recall that the short-lived Tropical Storm Kirk weakened to a depression on Sunday before fizzling into a blob of clouds and storms by Monday. The system is expected to run into heavy wind shear as it enters the Caribbean Sea, which will likely work to tear it apart.

But, as with the remnants of Kirk, it's not expected to do much long term.

NHC said that little change in strengthening is forecast until Kirk crosses the Lesser Antilles, followed by weakening over the eastern Caribbean Sea.

"A small-craft Warning means in this case that wind-speeds of 25 to 33 knots (47 to 62 km/h) and/or seas equal to or greater than 3m (10ft) will be affecting the marine area".

"By Thursday or Friday, Leslie is expected to reacquire subtropical or tropical characteristics while the cyclone moves slowly eastward to east-northeastward over the north-central Atlantic", the hurricane center's outlook said.

NHC said a tropical storm watch is in effect for St. Vincent and the Grenadines - with tropical storm conditions appearing within the next 36 hours. These rains may produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.
