Kavanaugh hearings: Trump stands by his man after emotional day

Kavanaugh hearings: Trump stands by his man after emotional day”

Emotionally battling to rescue his Supreme Court nomination, Brett Kavanaugh on Thursday denied allegations that he'd sexually assaulted Christine Blasey Ford when both were high school students and told Congress the accusations and biting criticism by Democrats had "totally and permanently destroyed" his family and reputation.

Trump borrowed a line from Kavanaugh, who cited the constitutional role of the Senate during the hearing to say that Democrats had "replaced advise and consent with search and destroy". His wife, Ashley, sat behind him stone-faced. "This confirmation process has become a national disgrace".

Ford said she was sure that Kavanaugh was the person who attacked her."With what degree of certainty do you believe Brett Kavanaugh assaulted you?"

"This was extremely emotional, extremely raw, and extremely credible", Wallace said, adding, "This is a disaster for the Republicans".

She says she witnessed Kavanaugh "drink excessively and engage in highly inappropriate conduct, including being overly aggressive with girls and not taking "No" for an answer". She said she was pushed into a bedroom and onto a bed and that Kavanaugh got on top of her. Judge was in the room and encouraged the attack, she said.

The hearing comes almost 30 years after her testimony against Clarence Thomas, who was later confirmation to the Supreme Court.

She is the third woman to have accused Kavanaugh with sexual assault.

Wallace added: "She obviously was traumatized by an event". Other than Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, the committee's Republicans stayed mum, each instead having Arizona sex-crimes prosecutor Rachel Mitchell ask questions during his allotted minutes.

Some held signs urging senators to "confirm Kavanaugh", others said: "Supreme injustice must end" and "We believe Dr. Blasey Ford". Ford has claimed that Kavanaugh tried to remove her clothes and clamped a hand over her mouth at a party when both were in high school.

Kavanaugh then was asked about, and categorically denied, an allegation made by a Rhode Island man - whose name was redacted from the transcript - raised in a call to Rhode Island Democratic Sen.

Trump said that if lawmakers had moved faster, "you wouldn't be talking about it right now, which is frankly what I would have preferred".

After recounting what she remembered of the alleged assault, Sen.

"Republican senators have delayed this for weeks now", Mr Trump said.

She criticized the decision to set a hearing for the Kavanaugh allegations without a thorough, neutral investigation and input from experts who can include context about things like delayed reporting of sexual assault, she said. Mitchell has been registered as a Republican all of her adult life, Phoenix television station KPNX reported. She began by expressing sympathy for Ford, who'd said she was "terrified" to testify. "I don't know who this is and this never happened", Kavanaugh said.

Rep. Anna Eshoo represents California's 18th congressional district and was the first member of Congress to hear Ford's story.
