Philippines arrests Duterte foe Trillanes after court revives charges”

Trillanes previous year appealed to the International Criminal Court to investigate killings in Duterte's war on drugs and had repeatedly accused the president of being a mass murderer and holding secret bank accounts.

He was later arrested after his 2011 amnesty was revoked and President Rodrigo Duterte revived rebellion charges against him.

A team led by Makati police chief Senior Superintendent Rogelio Simon confirmed that the police served the arrest warrant on Trillanes yesterday for the charge of rebellion, hours after the document was released by Makati Regional Trial Court Branch 150 Executive Judge Elmo Alameda.

A senator who has been a leading critic of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's deadly anti-drug campaign turned himself in to authorities voluntarily on Tuesday, after a court ordered his arrest following a presidential revocation of an amnesty for his past role in military mutinies. "Trillanes did not apply for amnesty", the order read.

After being given amnesty under Mr Duterte's predecessor, Benigno Aquino III, Mr Trillanes successfully petitioned two Philippine courts to dismiss rebellion and coup cases, allowing him to later run for public office.

Trillanes was taken by police to their headquarters in Makati city, where his fingerprints and mugshot were taken. The senator also backed the preliminary investigation by the worldwide criminal court into possible crimes against humanity being committed by Duterte in his war on drugs.

"This is a debacle and a defeat of democracy", Trillanes, a former navy officer, told reporters.

The trial court noted that Trillanes failed to present the original hard copy, a duplicate copy, or even a photocopy to substantiate his claim that he personally accomplished and filed his official amnesty application form.

He was then taken to Makati RTC Branch 150 to post the bail of P200,000 (NZ$5600).

The court also gave weight to the online news report published on January 5, 2011 which was presented by the prosecution to prove that Trillanes failed to expressly admit his guilt for the crimes committed during the Oakwood mutiny and manila Peninsula incident.

The Department of Justice has asked two courts to issue warrants for Trillanes's arrest and resume criminal proceedings against him. "This (case) has nothing to do with anything except for the vengeance of Duterte and his underlings".

"The court has spoken".

Trillanes is the second senator arrested after voicing criticism of Duterte's drug war.

Trillanes said "darkness and evil have prevailed in the country".

Roque added that Trillanes should stop the drama and instead respect the legal process.
