The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that the flu, as well as flu-related complications, was responsible for 80,000 USA deaths last winter. Flu activity traditionally begins to increase in October and can last as late as May, with cases typically peaking between December and February. "Getting your flu shot helps protect all, including older adults, very young children, pregnant women, and people with certain long-term health conditions who are more vulnerable to serious flu complications".

Speaking at the same conference, Dr. Laura E. Riley, professor and chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Weill Cornell Medicine, said that less than half of all pregnant women - 49% - received a flu shot a year ago.

Convenience plays a big role in ensuring as many people as possible get a shot.

The Health Department is offering flu vaccines by appointment at its four county health centers.

Last winter was not the worst flu season on record, however.

"Kids have a lot of snot, they have a lot of drool and they go to school", she said over laughter from the audience.

The overall effectiveness of last season's vaccine was estimated at 40 percent, according to the CDC.

Flu season generally tends to run from October to March in the U.S. However, doctors are urging patients to get the flu vaccine earlier this year in an effort to get more people vaccinated before the worst of the flu season. The estimate of 80,000 deaths previous year, still considered preliminary, eclipses the estimates for every flu season going back to the winter of 1976-1977.

The vaccine performed better against some strains than others.

Overall, the United States experienced one of the most severe flu seasons in recent decades.

Dr Linda Diggle, head of preventative programmes at Health, said this year the department was rolling out three extra measures to try to keep the "unpredictable" flu virus under control.

Those who do miss out on the early shots, however, should get one when they can. Flu is spread by droplets so it's important to wash hands, and avoiding contact with others who are ill.

So far, the flu that's been detected is a milder strain, and early signs are that the vaccine is shaping up to be a good match, Jernigan said.
