Texas surf resort tested after 'brain-eating amoeba' death”

Meanwhile, the BSR Surf Resort voluntarily closed its doors until the results of the analysis determine whether the surfer was infected, or not, in the artificial wave pool.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said contaminated water can enter through the nose and pass through the body.

A GoFundMe page - set up by Stabile's friends and family to raise awareness about PAM - writes that Stabile's symptoms first appeared on the afternoon of September 16, when he experienced an intense headache that forced him to take pain medication and lie down.

"Even so, this drug is not easily accessible".

"With great sadness and heavy hearts, we mourn the loss of a FABulous associate", the shop said on Facebook.

"A small CDC team collected samples for Naegleria Fowleri testing and will be working with the health department on recommendations to provide the facility on how to reduce potential exposures", reported CDC spokesperson Candice Burns Hoffmann in the Waco Tribune-Herald.

Stuart Parsons, the park owner, said in a statement that it will remain closed until the testing is completed.

Stabile, whose family said he was an avid outdoorsman who loved to surf, had been at the park on vacation. It can also be found in in soil. He later died of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis caused by the amoeba.

PAM is nearly always fatal. The organizations statistics indicate that since 1962 there have been 143 confirmed cases, of which only four people survived. Infections usually occur when it is hot for prolonged periods of time, which results in higher water temperatures and lower water levels.

Fabrizio Stabile, 29 died just one day after he was diagnosed with Naegleria fowleri, according to a GoFundMe page created by his family.

In light of Stabile's death, officials at the Waco-McLennan County Public Health District are troubleshooting to find the source of the amoeba.

The amoeba is rare, with 34 infections reported in the United States from 2008 to 2017.
