Europe Tells Trump: Don’t Bully Us on Trade”

In a blistering speech on Thursday, Mr Pence accused China of military aggression, commercial theft and rising human rights violations as he cast the Asian power as a villain bent on interfering in upcoming U.S. polls.

"Beijing has mobilised covert actors, front groups and propaganda outlets to shift Americans' perception of Chinese policies", he said.

Despite that, Pence said: 'As a senior career member of our intelligence community recently told me, what the Russians are doing pales in comparison to what China is doing across this country'.

Any residual hope Beijing might have had that the United States was not out to contain its rise was quashed by Vice-President Mike Pence's blistering attack on Thursday, according to analysts, who warned the speech marked a new low point in deteriorating bilateral relations.

"The more open tone of confrontation from Pence will strengthen the perception in China that the ultimate U.S. objective in the [trade] dispute is to contain China's rise", the group's analysts led by Asia director, Michael Hirson, wrote.

BRUSSELS-The pressure tactics used by President Trump to revamp the North American Free Trade Agreement won't work in trade talks with the European Union, European officials said Friday, warning that the EU's size and trading power puts it on more equal footing with the U.S.

Vice President Mike Pence laid out allegations of Chinese election interference in a harshly worded speech Thursday, signaling a firmer USA pushback against Beijing as trade anxiety weighs on the looming midterm congressional elections.

Pence said Beijing's actions add up to a simple message: "China wants a different American president".

Pence pointed to Trump's tough line on Beijing, particularly Trump's decision to impose $250 billion in tariffs on goods coming from the country.

He cited a Chinese government-run media company's four-page supplement in the Sunday Des Moines Register of Iowa as an attempt to turn voters in that state against Trump's trade policies.

Washington has long cited China as a major culprit in the cyber hacking of US government and corporate databases.

In his prepared remarks, Pence quotes an assessment from the US intelligence community that "China is targeting USA, state and local governments and officials to exploit any divisions between federal and local levels on policy".

He called on Google to cancel its "Dragonfly" project, an internet search engine for Chinese consumers that would filter out results objectionable to China's government. "That will strengthen the Communist Party's censorship and compromise the privacy of Chinese customers", said Pence.

"The Chinese military resolutely opposes such actions", the ministry added.

Pence mentioned Taiwan several times in the speech, in particular criticising Beijing for pushing three Latin American nations to sever ties with Taipei.

Chris Johnson, a former Central Intelligence Agency analyst and China expert now at the Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank in Washington, said Pence's speech appeared aimed at building a narrative that a vote for the Democrats would be vote for China. "We will not be intimidated, and we will not stand down".

Pence was also to use the phrase "debt diplomacy" in reference to China's efforts to expand its influence worldwide.

Pence also said China's navy engaged in "reckless harassment" this week when a Chinese naval vessel came within about 40 meters of a USA ship in the South China Sea.

Pence lashed out at China's human rights abuses in his remarks, including the shuttering of underground Christian churches last month, and reports of more than 1 million imprisoned Muslim Uygurs in the western province of Xinjiang.
