Nearly 40% Of Americans Admit To Eating Fast Food Every Day

Nearly 40% Of Americans Admit To Eating Fast Food Every Day”

The conventional wisdom about fast food is that people eat it when they can't afford something better, due to a lack of money or a lack of time.

Pick a day at random, and you can bet that almost 40% of Americans will eat fast food during those 24 hours, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS).

The survey compiled by the National Center for Health Statistics shows between 2013 and 2016, more than 36 percent of adults - or more than 1 in 3 - consume fast food on a given day. That's about 85 million people.

The study found that as people got older they tended to eat less junk food.

For example, while about 32 percent of lower-income folks ate fast food daily, more than 36 percent of middle-income consumers had fast food on a given day, as did 42 percent of those with higher incomes, the report found. The CDC used the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to collect their results.

The study did not find a difference between men and women. And among high-income families (those with incomes above 350 percent of the poverty line), 42 percent dined on fast food on a typical day.

Fast food is associated with all types of health problems.

Of all respondents, 43.7 per cent said they bought fast food for lunch, it was 42 per cent for dinner, while 22.7 per cent opted for the breakfast menu. That's significantly more than the 39.1 percent of women who do the same.

All in all, the report's findings are what most experts would expect and mirror fast food consumption patterns found among children, said Jennifer Harris, an associate professor in allied health sciences at the University of CT and director of marketing initiatives at the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity, who was not involved in the new CDC report.

By now, you might be wondering what it would take for Americans to dial back their addiction to fast food. Roughly 35 percent of Hispanic consumers and 31 percent of Asian-American consumers said they had eaten fast food the prior day.

Fast food has been linked to many health issues beyond weight gain. "However, what we should be scared of is double cheeseburgers, French fries and large amounts of sugary beverages", Weinandy said.

She added that despite fast food establishments saying they're offering healthier options - they merely have the perception of being healthy.

"Adults can go to the grocery store more and prep food to take on the go so we don't have to get in a situation where we need to rely on fast food so much", she said.
