Hurricane Leslie heads north in Atlantic Ocean

Hurricane Leslie heads north in Atlantic Ocean”

It's producing numerous showers and thunderstorms extending from Central America eastward through Hispaniola, according to the latest Tropical Weather Outlook from the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Leslie is packing sustained winds of 70 miles per hour; the storm is expected to intensify into a hurricane by or early Wednesday.

Leslie is sending large swells to Florida, but is not a direct threat to the U.S. It is notable in that it has undergone multiple transformations to gain hurricane status and keeps the season above normal in terms of activity.

Those swells could cause unsafe surf and deadly rip currents, the NHC said noting that a turn to the east is expect this weekend following an increase in forward speed.

Leslie was earlier forecast to be northeast of Bermuda and heading southwest, but it is now forecast to do a loop with a northward motion on Wednesday night.

The hurricane center is monitoring an area of low pressure located a couple hundred of miles north of Panama.

If the system were to become a tropical storm, it would be named Michael.

Strong winds and rain are set to his Britain this weekend but Met Office forecaster Andy Page says it is no different to typical low-pressure systems at this time of year. It did so on St. Lucia in the Lesser Antilles on Thursday.
