Collins: ‘I do not believe that Brett Kavanaugh was’ Ford’s assailant

Collins: ‘I do not believe that Brett Kavanaugh was’ Ford’s assailant”

People angry over her vote have vowed to make Collins pay a political price.

With various abortion-related cases pending in lower courts, Conway conceded litigation that could curb abortion rights without overturning Roe will reach the Supreme Court.

United States president Donald Trump had nominated Kavanaugh on July 9, 2018, as a replacement of Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy.

"In the public mind, there will always be this dark cloud hanging over the court, even if Kavanaugh is eventually embraced by all his colleagues on the court, " said Elizabeth Wydra, president of the liberal Constitutional Accountability Center.

Kavanaugh was sworn in as a justice Saturday evening in Washington after an extraordinarily fraught nomination that sparked angry protests, nail-biting votes and a national reckoning about sexual assault allegations and who should be believed. The Supreme Court says he will be sworn in later Saturday. Kavanaugh replaces Justice Kennedy, who was nominated to the Court by President Reagan in 1987, but had been the key swing vote on the Court ever since - and conservatives are counting on Kavanaugh tipping the balance of power in a decisive, long-term way, particularly when it comes to signature issues for the American right like the fight against abortion.

Senators confirmed his ascension to the nation's highest court by a vote of 50-48, nearly completely along party lines.

"Nothing unifies Republicans like a court fight", McConnell said in an interview ahead of the vote.

The confirmation means Trump has succeeded in having his two picks seated on the court - tilting it decidedly to the right in a major coup for the Republican leader less than halfway through his term.

Roberts was appointed by Bush in 2005 and has been characterized as the most centrist conservative on the court.

In outlining her argument, Collins argued that while she believes that Christine Blasey Ford, who testified last month before the Senate Judiciary Committee that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in the early 1980s, "is a survivor of a sexual assault", she does not believe that the allegation was corroborated.

"In front of the MS audience, Trump had mimicked Ford's testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, including the moment where she explained that there were certain details of the alleged sexual assault she couldn't remember".

"Going forward, you can count on me to be the same kind of judge and person I have been for my entire 28-year legal career: hardworking, even-keeled, open-minded, independent and dedicated to the Constitution and the public good", he wrote.

In stressing Kavanaugh's frequent agreement with Judge Merrick Garland on the federal appeals court in Washington, the new justice's backers seem to be suggesting that Kavanaugh's vote can not be taken for granted.

Mr Trump and his fellow Republicans said the new Federal Bureau of Investigation report had cleared their nominee.

The struggle over Kavanaugh's nomination reflected the stakes.

The second challenge will unfold more slowly over the decades for which a conservative majority on the court is likely to now be assured. People on the steps of the Capitol chanted "vote them out!" and "the whole world is watching", messages that at times met with jeers and boos from others in the crowd.

Trump also pointed to television footage of protesters outside the Capitol, and said their numbers paled in comparison to the thousands of supporters awaiting him in Kansas. Kavanaugh has denied the allegations.

Kavanaugh was also accused of sexual misconduct by Debbie Ramirez, a former Yale classmate, who said that he allegedly exposed himself to her, thrusting his penis in her face.

For now, many men apparently agree with Trump's warning that the surge in women speaking out against sexual violence in the #MeToo era has created "a very scary time" for men in America.

Trump said "radical Democrats" have become "an angry, left-wing mob" and "too unsafe and extreme to govern". He added: "What they're putting him through and his family is incredible". The audience laughed as Trump, at times inaccurately, recounted what he described as holes in her testimony.
