Netflix consumes 15% of the world’s global internet traffic

Netflix consumes 15% of the world’s global internet traffic”

"What might not have been expected is the gains that other application types have made even while video continues to drive downstream bandwidth usage".

Adding to the upswing in BitTorrent traffic, the report also noted, numerous exclusive series do not have distribution internationally, meaning that people in other countries have no choice but to obtain illegal copies to watch the shows.

Findings from Network Intelligence solutions provider Sandvine's installed base of 2.1 billion subscribers worldwide suggests that video is nearly 58 per cent of the total downstream volume of traffic on the Internet, with Netflix making up 15 per cent of the total downstream volume of traffic across the entire Internet.

In total, streaming video accounts for more than half the bandwidth on the internet worldwide at 58% of total bandwidth.

Gaming and file sharing are also a significant driver of traffic volumes, according to Sandvine's Global Internet Phenomena Report.

The Internet world is again witnessing a trend shift with BitTorrent acquiring 32% of the total upstream traffic in the Middle East, Europe, and Africa. By 2015, BitTorrent's share of upstream traffic on these networks had dipped to 26.83 percent, largely thanks to the rise in quality, low-cost streaming alternatives to piracy.

"If people can't get the content they want because they have to have multiple subscriptions or if it comes out a day later in their region and they don't want to see spoilers online, they resort to piracy", said Mr Cullen. In the U.S., Amazon Prime Video has now outperformed YouTube in information utilization (7.7% versus 7.5%).

In the Asia-Pacific region, HTTP media streams (embedded video on websites) were most popular, followed by Facebook, with Netflix in third place.

The data used for the report was compiled from more than 150 service providers around the world, representing 2.1 billion subscribers.
