Apple sends letter to Congress about alleged China spy chip

Apple sends letter to Congress about alleged China spy chip”

The United States and UK authorities have joined Amazon and Apple in contesting a blockbuster story last week that Chinese spies implanted tiny chips onto supply chain components used in the tech giants' products. The law enforcement agency denies that any such incident ever occurred and says it has "no reason to doubt" the statements made by Apple, Amazon, and others.

USA and United Kingdom government agencies have said they have "no reason to doubt" strong denials issued by Amazon and Apple that hardware hackers had successfully trojanized servers used by the companies, providing a backdoor for Chinese spies (see Report: Chinese Spy Chip Backdoored US Defense, Tech Firms). "The NCSC engages confidentially with security researchers and urges anybody with credible intelligence about these reports to contact us".

The US Department of Homeland Security issued a statement on Saturday saying "we have no reason to doubt the statements from the companies named in the story".

Apple, Amazon, and SuperMicro have denied Bloomberg's claims that their servers were infiltrated by Chinese agents who inserted microchips into their equipment. As the Register wrote, Apple and Amazon's denials were unusually firm, and it's possible that government sources overplayed the threat-though the site also found it "inconceivable that [Bloomberg] would publish a story this huge that wasn't watertight".

Given that this story is too huge to just sweep under the rug, denials came in swiftly from both Amazon and Apple. Apple's Vice President for Information Security Goerge Stathakopoulos in a letter to the Senate and House commerce committees said that Apple made repeated investigations but did not find any evidence whatsoever which support the claims made in the Bloomberg report.

Bloomberg cited 17 anonymous sources who confirmed Apple was compromised. "Apple has never found malicious chips, 'hardware manipulations, ' or vulnerabilities purposely planted in any server". The publication has a reputation for rigor, and lest it get some fact wrong and needlessly tank a whole industry, it generally errs on the side of not going to bat on neggy business stories.

In a statement, the DHS said: "Like our partners in the United Kingdom, the National Cyber Security Centre, at this time we have no reason to doubt the statements from the companies named in the story".

Bloomberg has stuck by its report, insisting on its veracity.
